Reactions of Metals with Oxygen and Steam. Final Report for June 15, 1958 - February 15, 1959

Description: Titanium, zirconium, and Zircaloy can spontaneously ignite under relatively mild conditions. The effect of temperature, oxygen concentration and pressure, and the nature of the diluent on the spontaneous ignition of titanium, zirconium, and Zircaloy were investigated.

Echelle Spectroscopy. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report

Description: This is the seventeenth quarterly report on our echelle project, as numbered above. Our work this quarter has to some extent been directed towards the Spectroscopy Symposium held at Argonne National Laboratory on February 15, 16, and 17. This report consists principally of brief abstracts of the two papers given at this meeting. Progress since the last quarterly report included completion of the echelle comparator calibration, and the successful production and photographing of the desired spect… more

The Surface Tension of Aqueous Uranyl Sulfate Solutions Between 20' And 75'C

Description: The surface tension of aqueous uranyl sulfate solutions, ranging in concentration from 0.175 molal to 2.340 molal, has been measured at 20', 30', 45', 60' and 75'C. The surface tension increases continually with increasing temperature, becoming in the most concentrated solutions about six percent greater than that for water at the same temperature.

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume II, Evaluation of Chemical Agents for Nuclear Reactor Decontamination

Description: Abstract: The caustic permanganate-rinse decontamination treatment was investigated. Loop and metallurgical studies were performed to determine optimum operating conditions as well as the metallurgical effects of the treatment. A treatment with 10 percent sodium hydroxide and 5 percent potassium permanganate solution followed by a rinse with a 5 percent ammonium citrate, 2 percent citric acid and 1/2 percent Versene solution was chosen for the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generat… more

Radiochemical Analysis of Crud from the Army Package Power Reactor

Description: Abstract: A study has been made of the radiochemical composition and the specific activity of insoluble corrosion products (crud) removed from the primary system of the APPR-1. This report presents the results of analysis of twelve crud samples collected during the interval from September 3, 1957 to December 1, 1957. The samples were radiochemically analyzed for long-lived gamma emitting nuclides only. Data are presented on the measured values of the specific activity of crud, the ratios of th… more
