Airborne Reconnaissance in Southwestern Arkansas

Description: Introduction: Reconnaissance for uranium in central and southwestern Arkansas was carried out as a joint project of the U.S. Atomic energy Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey during March and May 1954. The project was planned as an investigation of several areas of known abnormal radioactivity, and as a search for others, by airborne and ground radiometric reconnaissance.

Boiling Points and Surface Tensions of Mixtures of Benzyl Acetate With Dioxan, Aniline and Meta-Cresol

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Accurate measurements on boiling points and surface tensions of mixtures of benzyl acetate with dioxan, aniline and meta-cresol over the entire range of concentration are reported. The results have been analysed in terms of quasi-crystalline model which is partially successful in representing the composition dependence of heats of mixing, boiling points and surface tension except for composition dependence of boiling points of benzyl acetate and meta-cresol."

Chemical Properties of Sodium Triethylhydroborate and Sodium Triisopropoxyhydroborate

Description: Technical report abstract: Sodium hydride and triethylborane react to form sodium triethylhydroborate, NaBH(C2H5)3. This compound, a liquid at rooom temperature, was found to be soluble in hexane and mineral oil. A study was made of the thermal decomposition of sodium triethylhydroborate and its behavior toward boron trifluoride, boron trichloride, methyl borate, carbon dioxide, silane, and ethylene. Sodium triisopropoxyhydroborate, NaBH(OC3H7)3, was prepared and also found to be soluble in h… more

The Crystal Structure of Bis(Meta-Chlorobenzoyl) Methane

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The crystal structure of bis(meta-chlorobenzoyl) methane has been determined by three dimensional anisotropic least squares refinement of scintillation counter data. The molecule was found to be nearly planar with a maximum deviation from the least squares molecular plane of 0.068Å and an average deviation of 0.023Å. Fourier transform techniques to locate phenyl rings provided the key to the structure determination. The intramolecular bond distances and therma… more

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume 1, Contamination and Decontamination in Nuclear Power Reactors

Description: Abstract: A survey of the problem of reactor system contamination by radioactive material and methods that have been employed to remove the material was carried out. Following this survey, an investigation of chemical solutions was undertaken to find one which might be successfully employed in the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generator. From a preliminary screening, the most promising chemical method from the view point of minimum corrosion and maximum decontamination is a caus… more

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume III, Recommended Procedure for Decontamination of a Stainless Steel Steam Generator

Description: Abstract: A decontamination procedure for a stainless steel steam generator similar to the APPR-1 using a fill-flush application of a caustic permanganate-citrate combination solution is recommended. The isolation of the steam generator is to be accomplished by means of specially designed plugs at the reactor vessel outlet and at the primary coolant pumps. Anticipated results, including corrosion rates and decontamination factors, are presented.

The Design of a Nuclear Coolant Pump Speed Sensor

Description: "The design utilizes a 12-pole rotor with poles of magnetic 410 stainless steel. A voltage, the frequency of which is proportional to pump speed, is generated by a coil wound on a magnetized core. The coil is inserted in a well similar to that used for thermocouples. No penetration by electrical wires of the pump seal is required, and the coil can be readily replaced."

Dynamic B and n-Behavior Up to 7600 Gauss in Magnet Model Mark Ii Comparison of Results With Long and Small Grad Coils

Description: "Magnetic measurements were performance at excitation levels ranging from 4000 to 7600 gauss, to study the dynamic behavior of the magnetic and gradient lengths of the CEA magnet sectors. The influence of the proposed metal vacuum chamber on field and gradient was experimentally determined. Results of measurements made with a 26 in. long grad coil and with small circular grad coils are compared. The reliability of the 26 in. long grad coil is demonstrated."

Effects of Ionizing Radiations (And Other Agents) on the Developing Mammal

Description: We have been administering various forms of metabolic inhibition to adult, newborn and pregnant animals and studying them pathologically. The purpose of this program was threefold: (1) to learn how various tissues, especially parts of the nervous system, differ from one another metabolically and how they will therefore respond differently to the agents; (2) to learn in a similar way how embryonic tissues differ among themselves from the adults, and how their metabolism changes during developmen… more

Experimental Usefulness of the Kangaroo Rat

Description: Abstract. The kangaroo rat is readily tamed and has certain characteristics that make it unique and of interest in highly specialized research programs. Studies were conducted on its ability to exist on a dried diet with only a bare minimum of water and that obtained from succulent plants. Hematological studies indicate that the kangaroo rat exhibits a different hematological distribution of cells than the mouse or rat. The lymphocyte constitutes 81.4% of the total leuokocytes. The hematocrit h… more
