The Equation of State of Solids at Low Temperature

Description: Technical report describing and evaluating the the three experimental methods for obtaining equation of state data at low temperatures; (1) approximate measurement of the PVT relationship by a piston-displacement technique, (2) the measurement of a heat capacity at constant volume as a function of molar volume and temperature, and (3) direct measurement of the pressure variation of the elastic constants using ultrasonic techniques. X-ray methods also might be applicable.

Thermal Cycle Test in Sodium of an APDA Fuel Pin

Description: "An investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of thermal cycling in sodium of various fuel pins. The pin submitted for this test was a depleted uranium--10 wt.% molybdenum fuel pin sheathed with sponge zirconium, commercial grade. The pin was not end capped. The test consisted of the following thermal cycle: heating to 1575 plus or minus 25 deg F, holding, cooling to 250 plus or minus 25 deg F. The temperature of the test specimen exceeded 12OO deg F for at least 30 min. for each cyc… more

Stratospheric Monitoring Program

Description: "Design work was completed and construction initiated on a prototype field altimeter based on the gas density dependence of Townsend discharge current in an electrical discharge. The design of an ion tracer air velocity meter for laboratory applications, and construction of three units were successfully completed. Theoretical and experimental support is presented, showing the applicability of the ion tracer system to the accurate measurement of linear gas velocity. The operating range of the la… more

Geologic and Radiometric Reconnaissance Along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers Between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lees Ferry Arizona

Description: Abstract: Ten days were spent during June 1955, examining the sedimentary rocks along the San Juan and Colorado Rivers between Mexican Hat, Utah, and Lee's Ferry, Arizona. The most favorable area for uranium deposits occurs in the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation between Clay Hills Crossing and Spencer Camp along the San Juan River. Mineralization is spotty and deposits are small and almost all below ore-grade. Only one small mine, the Whirlwind, is currently producing ore. Gray-green a… more

Test Results, Determination of the Chemical Characteristics of the 1B Boiler

Description: "The chemical characteristics of the 1B boiler under variable load conditions were determined in order to ascertain what factors might have contributed to the heat exchanger tube failures. Chemical tests performed on the 1B boiler indicated that boiler water concentrations differed appreciably at various locations within the unit under high load conditions. Discrepancies were noted in the chemical concentrations in samples collected from two neighboring regions in the heat exchanger. The signif… more

The Crystal Structure of Bis(Meta-Chlorobenzoyl) Methane

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The crystal structure of bis(meta-chlorobenzoyl) methane has been determined by three dimensional anisotropic least squares refinement of scintillation counter data. The molecule was found to be nearly planar with a maximum deviation from the least squares molecular plane of 0.068Å and an average deviation of 0.023Å. Fourier transform techniques to locate phenyl rings provided the key to the structure determination. The intramolecular bond distances and therma… more

Use of Discharge Tubes in Spectrochemical Analysis

Description: While this survey of discharge tube sources probably has not yielded information of much direct interest to the great majority of analysts, it seems probable that these sources will become of greater interest as they become better developed and more demand is created for extension of spectrochemical methods to non-metallic samples.
