Mammalian Radiation Genetics

Description: "This symposium is concerned with the basic aspects of radiation effects. When we turn to the genetic effects of radiation in mammals, there are so few aspects on which there is any information that the problem of sorting out the fundamental findings has hardly arisen. In this paper it will, therefore, be possible to survey most of what is known and pass on to a consideration of what is needed next. Since one of the purposes of this symposium is an interchange of views between investigators in … more

Solution of Experimental Breeder Reactor Slugs

Description: From abstract: "A full-scale, always-safe, metal dissolver for Experimental Breeder Reactor fuel was designed, built, and installed for test operation. It was found that the dissolver operated satisfactorily, and feasible operating procedures were established for the dissolution of bare, or jacketed, EBR slugs. Minor modifications of the dissolver design have been required to accomodate [sic] a modified EBR slug, but it is believed that this will not significantly affect its operating character… more

Evaluation of Beta Radiation as a Hydrogenation Catalyst: Interim Technical Status Report for the Period March 1, 1962 to October 31, 1963

Description: From abstract: The concept of using high intensity beta radiation from an isotopic source, Sr-90, inside a high temperature, high pressure chemical reactor has been developed for potential radiation chemical processes. Distinct advantages include high utilizable intensity from a relatively small source with a minimum of shielding against external radiation.

Studies Regarding the Role of Wyoming Natural Gas in Precipitating Primary uranium Minerals from Pregnant Solutions

Description: Abstract: This project was designed to test the chemical feasibility of depositing of depositing a primary uranium mineral from a pregnant solution by exposing the solution to natural gas in an environment favorable to such deposition.

The Distribution of Uranium-Vanadium Deposits in the Colorado Plateau Relative to Tertiary Intrusive Masses

Description: Introduction: Studies of uranium-vanadium occurrences in the Four Corners region show that, with the exception of the Lukachuai area, all of the major deposits in the Morrison formation are grouped around the various igneous masses which are scattered irregularly throughout the Colorado Plateau. The pattern of deposition varies from mountain group to mountain group and each will be described separately. Maps accompany this report to supplement the descriptions of ore occurrences in the vicinity… more

Small Size Pressurized Water Reactor Conceptual Design: April 11, 1960

Description: From foreword: The purpose of this conceptual design is to outline criteria for the selection and development of a reactor plant with a fossil fuel fired superheater, a conventional generator plant and auxilary systems constituting a complete operating unit capable of producing a gross electrical power output of 22,000 kw.

Column Adsorption Methods in Analytical Chemistry

Description: Technical report. Numerous application of various column adsorption techniques to inorganic analytical chemistry have appear in the literature. The comparatively recent introduction of ion exchange resins has resulted in the development of efficient, simple, and rapid column adsorption methods. the principal service of column adsorption methods to analytical chemistry is that of providing a relatively simple means of separating an element in a sufficiently pure state so that a direct precipita… more

High Pressure Pump Seal Development, Engineering Quarterly Progress Report: March-May 1962

Description: "Results of tests indicate that the nucerite-bearium seal system is compatible. This combination was operated as long as 9 hours without serious damage. In other work, the test rig was modified to eliminate pressure fluctuations and extraneous dirt, and Type IIA seal parts were designed."

Uranium Geochemical Survey in the Crystal City and Beeville Quadrangles, Texas

Description: From objectives: This report demonstrates the concept of hydrogeochemical sampling to be used in the 12-state region for which UCC-ND has the responsibility if surveying as part of the NURE. The results of a geochemical survey at two sample spacings in the Crystal City Quadrangle in south Texas are presented.

Application of Ascorbic Acid Method to Uranium in Salvage Solutions

Description: Abstract: The erroneously high values for uranium content of salvage solutions as determined by the ether extraction-ascorbic acid procedure have been demonstrated to be due to the presence of colored organic materials in these solutions. Evaporation of such solutions to fumes of HC104 before extraction has been shown to be completely successful in preventing such interference while pretreatment with activated carbon is sufficiently successful for application in Control laboratories. The Fission Neutron Spectrum of 25

Description: Abstract: "Photographic plates have been used to measure the energy of neutrons from the fission of 25. The spectrum as inferred from the ranges of 850 protons recoiling in the forward direction shows a very wide maximum at ~1.5 Mev with an exponentially decreasing high energy tail which extends beyond 7 Mev. The minimum energy neutrons recorded were ~700 kv. If the spectrum is extrapolated to zero, one finds that this average neutron energy is about 1.85 Mev. The stopping power of the plates w… more

Photon Spectrum From Bremsstrahlung

Description: Abstract: The number of photons of given energy radiated in Bremsstrahlung collision of electrons with nuclei is calculated relativistically. Expansions are obtained for energies small to mc-squared. The photon spectrum is averaged over a Maxwell distribution for the electrons. Numerical results are included.
