Analysis of Iron in Thorium, Beryllium, and Cerium

Description: Introduction. the colorimetric determination of iron based on the formation of the colored ferrous-1,10-phenanthroline complex has been used successfully by a number of investigators. In this technical report, its adaptation to the routine determination of iron in cerium, thorium, and beryllium metals and their compounds is described.

Diffusion of Krypton Through Uranium Carbide - Final Report

Description: This program was established to develop new information concerning the mechanism of diffusion of fission gases (krypton and xenon) through UO2 and UC. The work was to concentrated on measurements of diffusion rates in unirradiated materials in the temperature range of 1000°C to above 2000°C, these determinations being important to the projected use of refractory fuel materials in high-temperature, high-burnup reactors.

Energetic Neutral Injection into Thermonuclear Machines

Description: Abstract: "A scheme is discussed in which D+ ions would be accelerated to about 100 kev in a conventional accelerator, then be sent through a gas target frmo which about half the ions would emerge neutral with very little scattering or energy loss; the neutral beam would then cross into a magnetic field and part of the atoms would be ionized and trapped by colliding with the already trapped ions. The smallest mirror machine with a central field of 30-40 kilogauss, 2;1 mirror ratio and β = 01 to… more

Flow-Gating I : Report No. 83

Description: The simple problem occurring in a computer of transferring a zero or a one from one place to another in a selective fashion is considered by discussing the transmission of information from one Eccles-Jordan flipflop to another. It is assumed that non-overlapping voltage bands represent the zero and one signals the bands being caused by parameter drift.

Frequency Components of a Step Function and a Sinusoid

Description: Fourier analyses are made on two functions. The first is a step function forward from periodic samples of a sinusoid. If the frequency of the sinusoid is less than one-half of the sampling frequency, it is shown that the step function has no frequency components less than one-half of the sampling frequency other than that of phase, and duration with respect to the interval of the analysis. It is shown that the insertion of a blank space in the period of analysis reduces greatly the uncertainty … more

Geology of Horse Mesa, Arizona - New Mexico, with Recommendations for Wagon Drilling

Description: Abstract: Horse Mesa is in the Navajo Indian Reservation directly on the Arizona-New Mexico state line. Uranium-vanadium deposits in the Salt Wash sandstone which caps the Mesa are fairly widespread and small tonngges have been shipped from two mines. The deposits lie 60 to 75 feet above the base of the Salt Wash formation and possibly trend northwest parallel to ore trends on King Tutt Mesa, a mile northeast. Carnotite and vanoxite are the principal ore minerals. About 6,000 feet of wagon dril… more

Graphite Sample Boring from Process Channels : Final Report, Production Test 105-389-P

Description: The following report records a total of forty-nine graphite core samples that have been bored from process tube blocks in the Hanford piles with the intention to provide results to indicate that core boring is an entirely practical operation over bore scraping in obtaining powder samples.

Healing of Fast-Neutron-Induced Changes in Graphite. II. The Effect of Heating During Exposure, Interim Report on Problem 323 MLC 2301

Description: Technical report. The effect of temperature during pile exposure on the fast-neutron-induced change in properties of graphite was studied. Temperatures up to 125 degrees C have no effect upon the rate of increase of elastic modulus; pieces exposed at 300 degrees C on the other hand show no change at all in elastic modulus. The increase in electrical resistance s an inverse function of the temperature of exposure at all temperatures in the range 60 to 300 degrees C.

Heat and Free Energy of the Reaction AmCl₃s + H₂O(g) = AmOCl(s) + 2HCl(g)

Description: In a previous paper a method of measuring the equilibrium constants at various temperatures for the titular reaction has been described. This report applies the method to an investigation of the corresponding reaction of americium, representing a part of a systematic program of investigation of the thermodynamic properties of analogous reactions of lanthanide and actinide elements.

Leaching and Precipitation Tests on Grants Ores

Description: Leaching tests were run on two samples from the Grants area in New Mexico. Uranium extractions of 94 per cent were obtained by leaching Sample 6-1 with solutions containing 240 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 60 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton and by leaching Sample 6-2 with 270 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 180 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton. Cyclic tests were completed using caustic precipitation of the leach liquor.
