Diffusion of Krypton Through Uranium Carbide - Final Report

Description: This program was established to develop new information concerning the mechanism of diffusion of fission gases (krypton and xenon) through UO2 and UC. The work was to concentrated on measurements of diffusion rates in unirradiated materials in the temperature range of 1000°C to above 2000°C, these determinations being important to the projected use of refractory fuel materials in high-temperature, high-burnup reactors.

Periodic Radiation Survey. Section II. 4182-EFPH. Second Performance. Core I, Seed 1. Test Results DL-S-231 (T-612394)

Description: The purpose of the survey was to determine the radiation level in the Turbine Generator Services Building, around the Fuel Handling Canal, in the limited access areas of the reactor plant containers and on the boiler container roofs during plant operation. The test was performed with the plant at approximately 100 per cent power with three loops (1A, 1B, and 1C) in service. The radiation levels of the areas surveyed with a few exceptions were essentially background (.03 MR/HR). These exceptions… more

Study of Factors Influencing Ductility of Iron-Aluminum Alloys

Description: This report is the seventh of a series of monthly letter reports for the contract year, 15 March 1959 to 15 March 1960, describing the progress made on the research program, "Study of Factors Influencing Ductility of Iron-Aluminum Alloys". The objective of the program is to determine the effect of variations of aluminum content, heat treatment, and basic slip mechanism upon the room temperature ductility of Fe-Al alloys.

Reactor Automatic Control and Load Swing Tests. Test Results DL-S-144 (T-554924). Section I

Description: The purpose of this test was to determine the controlling ability of the Reactor Power and Temperature Control System and to determine the operational characteristics of the station during load swings. The Reactor Power and Temperature Control System satisfactorily controlled rod movements to maintain all primary plant parameters within their individual limits during steady state operation, ramp functions load changes and a peak xenon burnout transient. The operational characteristics of the st… more

Station Output. Test Results DL-S-210 (T-612387). Section 1

Description: The purpose of the test was to obtain performance data at selected steady state generator loads. The data obtained during the performance of this test indicated that the station performed satisfactory under the new operating conditions of 500 F average coolant temperature and 1800 psia coolant pressure at the selected power lever of 57 mw.

Polarography in Organic Analysis

Description: The discussion attempts to summarize present trends and future possibilities. After consideration of the areas of analytical applicability of polarography of organic compounds with stress on the use of chemical treatment to convert polarographically inert species to active ones, the importance of the composition of the test solution is discussed from the viewpoint of the effects of pH, buffer composition and concentration, ionic strength, solvent nature and additives. The critical factors in th… more

Remarks on the Use of Westcott's Correlation

Description: As indicated by Westcott, this type of approach is only valid for a well-moderated reactor and the graphite moderated HTGR and MGCR do not obey this condition. In this report we will use some elementary arguments for deriving an expression for a limit on the C/U atomic ratio below which the Westcott correlation and similar methods might be in error. The whole argument is based upon a homogenous reactor model. To be specific, graphite moderation is assumed throughout, although this is not essent… more

Flow-Gating I : Report No. 83

Description: The simple problem occurring in a computer of transferring a zero or a one from one place to another in a selective fashion is considered by discussing the transmission of information from one Eccles-Jordan flipflop to another. It is assumed that non-overlapping voltage bands represent the zero and one signals the bands being caused by parameter drift.

Radiation Damage to Vacuum Chamber Walls

Description: "The problem of radiation derange to the walls of two types of vacuum chamber for the 6 Bev Cambridge Electron Accelerator was studied. Radiation damage may arise from the synchrotron radiation and from electrons which are not accepted at injection. The synchrotron radiation produces a large amount of secondary x radiation which is isotropic, and therefore complicates the arrangement of internal shielding. The 20 Mev electrons from the lines cannot be attenuated by shielding. It is concluded th… more

Review of the Surface Interaction Theory of Rearrangement and Inelastic Collisions

Description: Deuteron reactions assumed new importance when it was found that the angular distribution of the outgoing particles in d-p and d-n reactions displayed a great deal of structure. Bhatia, Huang, and Butler showed that the structures of the angular distribution of the outgoing particles in d-p and d-n reactions is directly related to the angular momentum of the captured particle. Early studies of deuteron stripping fractions were reviewed and summarized by R. Huby. Additional work was reviewed, an… more
