Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

The Application of Nuclear Energy to Agriculture

Description: Differences were found in the radiosensitivity of cacao clones. Studies are continuing to see if these differences are related to nuclear damage. Radiosensitivity of rubber, palms, and bananas are being studies. Angustifolia mutants appeared from irradiated coffee seeds. The response was linear with thermal neutrons but exponential with gamma rays. The hypothesis of a two hit chromosomal aberration is being tested with coffee and Crotalaria which probably gave an exponential response (sectorial… more

Bimetallic Casting

Description: "Uranium and zirconium were bonded by melting the two metals in contact with one another in a bimetallic casting process. Tensile tests of specimens containing the original zone of interface between the two metals showed that all failures were at locations other than the interface. The coefficients obtained for diffusion between molten uranium and molten zirconium varied from 2.13 cm squared per day at 3,380 degrees F. to 9.17 cm squared per day at 3,510 degrees F. the activation energy for th… more

Calculation of Parameters for Low Pressure Gas Liquefaction Cycles

Description: The purpose of the study reported here was to investigate qualitatively low pressure methods for the liquefaction of hydrogen. The desirability of such an investigation grew out of the successful development of low pressure helium refrigeration systems, examples of which are The Collins Helium Cryostat and Helium Refrigerated Transport Dewar. There are two basic practical cycles for liquefying hydrogen at low working pressures.

The Chattanooga Shale of Tennessee as a Source of Uranium: Final Report

Description: From major objective: The over-all aim of the study has been to obtain a thorough geologic picture of the Chattanooga shale in the area under consideration, with emphasis upon stratigraphic relationships and associated special problems from which, in turn, implications may be obtained as to the origin and age of the formation and possibly the source of the uranium. The study has not been aimed primarily at exploration for uranium and its economic aspects.

The Chemical Effects of 1 Mev Electrons on BrF3 at 25 degrees C

Description: "An investigation of the chemical effects of 1-Mev electrons on BrF3 at 25 degrees C has been carried out. Pressure measurements taken during the irradiation suggest the presence of Br2 and BrF5 as decomposition products and a fractional distillation of the irradiated liquid confirmed their presence. The extent of decomposition was determined both by fraction distillation and spectrophotometric methods. The radiation effect seemed to reach saturation when approximately 10 per cent of the BrF3… more

The Cobalt Transformation

Description: The fcc hcp transformation in cobalt powder (equilibrium temperature = 417 C) was studied by x-ray methods and correlated with the density of stacking faults in both phases. Only the hcp phase is present in the cold-worked powder. The line broadening due to local strains and small particle sizes can be essentially removed by annealing at 300 C, leaving a residual broadening that permits a quantitative determination of the density of random growth and deformation faults. The latter are present i… more

A Comparison of Radiation--Induced Graft Copolymerization Utilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

Description: "The grafting of methacrylic acid, styrene (2: 1 mole ratio) co-monomer mixture on polypropylene film and fabric, was studied to compare electron accelerators and isotopes as sources of radiation. An aluminum block that contalns i/8-in.-deep pockets covered with Mylar film for holding sample and monomer during mutual irradiatlon was developed. A preliminary comparison was made in post grafting polypropylene film and fabric preirradiated with Cow and with an electron accelerator source. It was f… more

A Comparison of Some Piezoelectric Ceramics

Description: This memorandum summarizes some of the basic physical properties of barium titanate, lead-zirconate titanate, and lead metaniobate which are of importance to the use of these materials as piezoelectric transducers. Emphasis is placed on the advantages of lead metaniobate due to its extended temperature range of operation and on the importance of further work to improve the quality of this material.

The Creation of Sexual Isolation by Artificial Selection

Description: Two laboratory strains of D. melanogaster - Ore R marked with the recessive stw and Florida marked with the recessive se -- were carried in a mixed population through 33 generations. In each generation the percentage of stw, se, and wild-type flies was determined; the wild-type flies were discarded, and the next generation set up with equal numbers virgins of the two recessive strains. In spite of a contamination which brought in double recessive phenotypes from generation 16 on, the percentage… more

The Detection of Small Amounts of Fluorine in Large Amounts of Chlorine

Description: Abstract: "Tests have been developed for both the qualitative detection and quantitative determination of fluorine in chlorine. The qualitative test is made by passing the gas through manganous chloride. If the pink solid tubes brown there is greater than 0.5 percent of fluorine in the gas. The quantitative test is a modification of the Steiger and Marvin Test with oxidized titanium solution."

Determination of half life of polonium-210 by counting: final report

Description: Introduction: "A number of determination have been made of the half life of polonium-210 by calorimetry. Counting affords an entirely different method of determining half lives and requires only a small amount of activity. Therefore for comparison a half-life determination by counting was undertaken with a sample of approximately 0.5 millicurie of polonium."
