Bimetallic Casting

Description: "Uranium and zirconium were bonded by melting the two metals in contact with one another in a bimetallic casting process. Tensile tests of specimens containing the original zone of interface between the two metals showed that all failures were at locations other than the interface. The coefficients obtained for diffusion between molten uranium and molten zirconium varied from 2.13 cm squared per day at 3,380 degrees F. to 9.17 cm squared per day at 3,510 degrees F. the activation energy for th… more

Significance Arithmetic on the IBM 7090

Description: "The 7090 at NYU has been modified to include a "Significance Mode" of operation which is intended to facilitate the identification of significant bits in the results of floating point arithmetic operations. The manner in which floating point arithmetic is handled in this mode is discussed. Several numerical experiments using this mode are described and comparisons are made with the ordinary "normalized mode." Examples include power series evaluation, linear equations solution, determinant ev… more

On Certain Finite Difference Schemes for the Equations of Hydrodynammics

Description: "We will consider two finite difference schemes for the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations in one space dimension. The first is a method used by Lax and Wendroff. The second method is based on an approximate solution of the centered, implicit difference equations. Since this approximate solution is obtained by successive substitutions, we will refer to this second method as an iterative method."

Irradiation Loop Studies of Organic Reactor Coolants Quarterly Report: July 1-September 30, 1961.

Description: Irradiation of Santowax OMP was initiated in the M.I.T. Reactor Organic In-Pile Loop on August 9, 1961 and is continuing. As of September 30, 1961 the total absorbed dose to an average inventory of 5000 grams of coolant was 79,900 watt-hrs. In this same period of time approximately 35% of the terphenyls in the coolant have been degraded.

Some methods of surface analysis for the prediction of thermal resistance of metal contacts

Description: "Equations for the heat-transfer coefficient existing at the interface of two metals in contact are discussed. The results of applying the equations (with a graphical determination of the geometric parameters) to an iron--aluminum contact are presented. A method is given for performing the graphical analysis by means of a general purpose analog computer. Data are included that were obtained by applying this method to Blanchard ground stainless steel surfaces in contact. Statistical analysis was… more

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems

Description: The methods of successive displacements or relaxation methods are investigated for a class of nonlinear problems. In particular it is shown that these methods are applicable to a large class of nonlinear problems arising from variational problems which yield elliptic equations. Constructive existence and uniqueness theorems are presented for the discrete problem and criteria are given for a practical method of obtaining solutions. The example of a discrete Plateau problem is used to illustrate … more

Some Computational Methods for the Study of Diatomic Molecules

Description: "The present work describes some computer-oriented techniques for the application of the laws of quantum mechanics to the problems of determining basic structure of diatomic molecules. At times, calculations of the type described here yield results which can be compared directly with experiment to check the validity of the hypotheses and technique used they may predict the results of unobserved experimental phenomena; and, in many instances, they provide quantities which are necessary for the … more

Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

A Comparison of Radiation--Induced Graft Copolymerization Utilizing Electron Accelerators and Isotope Sources as Radiation Initiators

Description: "The grafting of methacrylic acid, styrene (2: 1 mole ratio) co-monomer mixture on polypropylene film and fabric, was studied to compare electron accelerators and isotopes as sources of radiation. An aluminum block that contalns i/8-in.-deep pockets covered with Mylar film for holding sample and monomer during mutual irradiatlon was developed. A preliminary comparison was made in post grafting polypropylene film and fabric preirradiated with Cow and with an electron accelerator source. It was f… more
