14-Year 113Cd

Description: The half lives of Cd/sup 113m/ and Cd/sup 115m/ have been redetermined to be 14 sintering time 2 years and 44.2 sintering time 0.5 days, respectively. The ratio of Cd/sup 113m/Cd/sup 115m/ yields from thermal-neutron fission of U/sup 235/ is 0.27 sintering time 0.03, and the ratio of (n, ) formation cross sections is 0.31 sintering time 0.03. Combination of these ratios with literature values for the Cd/sup 115m/ fission yield and (n, ) formation cross section gives (1.9 sintering time 0.2) x 1… more

AETR Nuclear Mockup Design

Description: This report is submitted in fulfillment of the portion of the modified contract AT(11-1)688 dealing with the detailed engineering design of a nuclear mockup facility. This mockup is designed to be a flexible, inexpensive development facility which duplicates the reactor portion of the AETR and which would be used to verify the operation of reactor controls. The mockup would also furnish measurements of temperature and void coefficients, flux shapes, and critical mass, and facilitate a reliable … more

Analysis of Errors to be Expected in Measuring the Neutron Absorption Cross Section of C-12

Description: An experiment now in progress should give some accurate information about the thermal neutron absorption cross section of carbon 12. This report outlines and summarizes this experiment and analyzes it to determine the main sources of error and the probably error in the final result.

Analysis of Uranium-Manganese Alloys

Description: Introduction. the conventional procedures of analysis for uranium and manganese can be employed in the analysis of alloys of these metals. The alloys are reacted with perchloric acid and hydrogen peroxide, fumed to remove any chloride ions, diluted to volume and aliquots analyzed by redoximetry.

Application of the Printed Wiring Laminate in Electronic Packaging

Description: The use of flexible printed circuits in electronic packaging applications is discussed. The wiring is printed on very thin copper-sled lamination consisting principally of epoxy resins and reinforcement materials. Specifically considered here are the types of materials and their availability, conductor-laminate bond strength properties, shaping characteristics, and processing and operating stability.

The Armour Dust Fueled Reactor (ADFR). Final Report Covering the Period February 21, 1958 to February 21, 1959

Description: Dust circulation studies were conducted in a 2-in.diam. glass tubing loop, 5 x 5 ft, at gas velocities of 100 and 150 fps. Most of the studies were done with Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ in air, but some were done with U0/sub 2/2 in N/sub 2/ . Two-group criticality calculations for a graphite-reflected and moderated U/ sup 235/ burner gave approximate values of core size and fuel concentration. Investigation of axial variations in fuel density indicate that the axial neutron flux and power distributions d… more

Atomic Energy Levels for the Thomas-Fermi and Thomas-Fermi-Dirac Potential

Description: Some term values for circular orbits and for the 5f level have been determined by previous investigators with this potential, but a general exploration of the results to be obtained has not previously been carried out. The results of such an exploration will be presented here for the isolated, zero-temperature atom for all atomic numbers and for the one-electron term values from 1e to 7d.

Behavior of Polyvalent Metallic Ions in 100% Acetic Acid Reactions of Rare Earth Compounds in Acetic Acid

Description: "The solution of a polymeric oxide such as a rare earth oxide in protonic solvents such as acetic acid may be regarded as a steo-wise process involving rupture of Ln-O-Ln linkages, to form "hydroxyacetates" of varying molecular size and complexity. Intermediate oxo-hydroxo-brdiges aggregates could therefore be formed by solvolysis processes. Further reaction with acetic acid could effect dehydration of such "hydroxyacetates", to yield oxo-bridged acetates, Ln2O(OAc).

Calculation of the G Factor for Gas Scattering Experiments

Description: The "G factor'' relating the yield to the beam intensity, target density, and scattering cross section is calculated for several types of aperture boundaries. The case of a front aperture composed of two parallel edges of infinite height with a rear aperture of any shape is calculated up to terms in the fourth derivative of the cross section. (W.D.M.)

The Chemical Effects of 1 Mev Electrons on BrF3 at 25 degrees C

Description: "An investigation of the chemical effects of 1-Mev electrons on BrF3 at 25 degrees C has been carried out. Pressure measurements taken during the irradiation suggest the presence of Br2 and BrF5 as decomposition products and a fractional distillation of the irradiated liquid confirmed their presence. The extent of decomposition was determined both by fraction distillation and spectrophotometric methods. The radiation effect seemed to reach saturation when approximately 10 per cent of the BrF3… more
