Structural Alterations in the Tissue Sections Associated with Embedding Following Freeze Drying

Description: Various types of tissue distortion and structural artifacts which occur in stained microscopic tissue sections are usually referred to as "fixation artifacts." These include, among other effects, shrinkage of cells (e.g. crenation of red cells, shrinkage of blood plasma away from vessel walls, and shrinkage of groups of cells producing microscopic empty spaces between structures within the tissue section. On the other hand, swelling and even rupture of cells (e.g. homolysis of red cells) is al… more

Rubber Hydrochloride Film as a Replacement for Nylon Film for Radiation Detection Detecting Instruments. Technical Memorandum No. 5-52-15

Description: Air filled proportional or ionization type alpha radiation detecting instruments are usually covered on the open face with a thin conductive film of material. due to the low penetrating ability of alpha particles, it is essential that the film be extremely thin and hence quite fragile. A determination of certain properties of rubber hydrochloride film indicated that it possesses advantages over nylon film which is presently used. Rubber hydrochloride is more resistant to puncture, easily decont… more

Duration of Post-Irradiation Bacteremia in Mice

Description: Mice exposed to moderate does of total body x-radiation have been found to develop septicemias during the second week post-irradiation. The micro-organisms causing these generalized infections were all members of normal intestinal flora. The results of our experiments confirm those obtained on mice killed at daily intervals post-irradiation. Septicemia is a prominent manifestation or irradiation injury the second week post-irradiation in mice exposed to moderate does of x-ray. These results sho… more

The Gram-Negative Flora of the Upper Intestinal Tract and Its Influence on Post-Irradiation Bacteremia in Mice

Description: A systematic study of the flora of the intestinal tract of mice exposed to 550 r of total body x radiation showed an increase in all the Gram negative bacilli in the upper half of the small bowel about the end of the first week post irradiation. When the flora of the gut was changed artificially by introducing about 10 Pseudomonas aeruginosa the effect produced increased with the lapse of time after exposure to irradiation. The sharpest rise in mortality due to Pseudo monas bacteremia occurred … more
