Anderson Physical Laboratory Progress Report

Description: In July 1959, work has progressed on a number of fronts on the preparation and analysis of pure alkali halide crystals. Some good results have been obtained with the anion exchange method of purification, but the work on distillation and vapor phase chromatography has not yet progressed far enough for results to be available.

The Biological Behavior of Organic Compounds Containing Radiophosphorus

Description: The study was undertaken with the objective of observing the distribution in the rat of organic compounds of phosphorus labelled with the P32 isotope as tracer. The fate of several of these compounds was studied in animals bearing tumors. The distribution of inorganic phosphate in animal tissues is well known but was included in this work for comparison with the organic phosphorus compounds.

Direct Current Electromagnetic Pumps

Description: Abstract: "A number of direct current conduction type electromagnetic pumps for liquid metals were constructed. Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

DuPont Prototype Safety and Control Rod Drive Testing

Description: Summary: Prototype testing of the safety and control rod drives indicated that both units functioned properly. No major problems were encountered during testing. Seal leakage data collected indicated that the seal units were performing satisfactorily. Scram times during both cold and hot testing were excellent and actually better than expected.

Effect of Irradiation of Solid Catalysts

Description: The work done during this period continued along the same lines as outlined in the first two quarterly reports. The catalysts irradiated this period all received a beta radiation dose of 200 megarads, ten times that given the catalysts previously. At this dosage, some changes in catalytic activity were observed.
