Procedures for the Separation of Products Resulting From Bombardment of Heavy Elements

Description: Technical report that attempts to bring together the various chemical procedures which proved most useful in studying the results of cyclotron bombardment or small scale neutron bombardments of heavy element targets. The report is limited to the elements of the "actinide", or second rare earth series, starting with thorium and including the newly discovered elements of atomic number 95 and 96. Every attempt is made to include all details necessary so this report can serve as a practical labora… more

The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron

Description: Technical report describing that the use of controlled amounts of carbonate, acting both as complexing agent buffer led to a fairly satisfactory procedure for the determination of Th in Th-U alloys, using cupferron. The alloy, dissolved in NHO2, in the presence of HF, is treated with H2SO4 and the mixture is evaporated in SO2 fumes. The solution is diluted and (NH4)2CO2 is added. Th is precipitated from this solution with cupferron. The precipitate is weighed as ThO2 after ignition. An accura… more

Flame Spectra of Vanadium, Niobium, Rhenium, Titanium and Molybdenum

Description: Abstract Line spectra of vanadium, niobium, titanium, molybdenum and rhenium of sufficient intensity to allow detection at the 1–10 p.p.m. level can be excited in fuel-rich, oxy-acetylene flames. For the strongest lines of tungsten, the sensitivity of detection is 90 p.p.m. Weak lines of zirconium, hafnium, osmium, tantalum and uranium are also observed in these flames. Recordings of the spectra are given along with wavelength tables of the strongest lines.

Radiation Chemistry of Ammonia Synthesis of Hydrazine

Description: The radiation chemistry of ammonia, pure or with various additives, was studied by Co60 gamma radiation. The kinetics of aniline formation by the irradiation of homogeneous benzene-ammonia mixtures was determined together with the kinetics of hydrazine formation in the case of pure ammonia. The effects of dose, intensity, temperature, and specific additives were determined.

Ion Exchange Absorption of Cesium by Potassium Hexacyanocobalt(II) Ferrate(II)

Description: Abstract: A description is given of the preparation and properties of a granular form of potassium hexacyanocobalt (II) ferrate (II) that is a highly selective absorbent for cesium ion. The material is suitable for use in a large-scale ion exchange column, and offers the possibility of isolating and concentrating Cs137 from fission product waste solutions that arise from the processing of nuclear fuels.

Summary of the Research Progress Meeting of March 9, 1950

Description: The design of the present time of light mass spectrograph is similar to that of the isotron devised some time ago for isotope separation. The spectrograph will employ the time of flight principle only for the isotopic analysis of small samples.

Corrosion of Stainless Steels in Purex Acid Concentrators

Description: The corrosion resistance of four types of austenitic stainless steels to Purex process first and second acid concentrator bottoms was determined. Although the compositions of the two solutions were very similar, tests in simulated solutions of both compositions were conducted to strengthen the basis for the conclusions which were to be made.

Possible Process Alternatives for Converting Recovered Uranyl Nitrate to Uranium Hexafluoride

Description: The uranium recovery processes which are in operation or under construction at the present time--TBP, Redox and Purex--yield an aqueous uranyl nitrate solution as the recovered uranium product. For conversion of this recovered uranium to UF6 for feed to the gaseous diffusion plants, the uranyl nitrate in the solution is concentrated with or without prior organic stripping, calcined to UC3, reduced to UO2 with hydrogen, hydro-fluorinated to UF4 with RF, and finally fluorinated to UF6 with eleme… more

An Ionization Chamber Method for the Standardization of Tritiated Water Samples

Description: Ionization measurements of water vapor in vapor-liquid equilibrium were made with a series of chambers on a tritiated water sample which was prepared by burning T2 to T2O and diluting it with H2O. A correction was made for the difference of vapor pressures of HTO and H2O. The effect of HTO adsorbed on chamber walls and electrodes was eliminated from the final result. Using Gerbes data on the number of electron volts to produce an ion pair in air, agreement obtained between the measured sourc… more

Selection of Personnel for Reactor Operator Training

Description: Over the past six years, the hiring practices of the Reactor Operations Division of Argonne National Laboratory have been conducted to determine the highest level of personnel who would be willing to remain in the position of reactor operator. We have discontinued the hiring of personnel who have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or who are close to receiving such a degree. We now hire men from three general categories: (1) graduates from two-year technical institutes, (2) men… more
