Production test IP-805, irradiation of neptunium target elements

Description: A sustained demand for large quantities of plutonium 238, a heat generating isotope, formed by irradiation of neptunium 237, is anticipated over the next ten to fifteen years. Plutonium 238 is thus a natural candidate as an alternate product for production reactors. Detailed studies have been completed outlining the advantages and incentives of producing plutonium 238 at Hanford. A primary conclusion of these studies is that more efficient production is possible in Hanford`s relatively low neut… more

PROPERTIES OP LIQUID HELIUM-THREE IN THE TWO-BODY CORRELATION APPROXIMATION. I

Description: This is the first of two papers in which the low-temperature properties of liquid He{sup 3} are to be calculated in the thermodynamically consistent 'T-matrix' approximation. The set of coupled integral equations which are to be solved is exhibited in Part A of this paper. Part B of this paper is devoted to a preliminary, zero-temperature calculation which employs the additional approximations of using separable potentials and a noninteracting spectral function to define the interaction of two … more

Aerospace Safety Results from a Rover/Nerva Post-Operational Destruct Test

Description: The destruction of a full scale mockup ROVER/NERVA propulsion engine· was performed under the direction of the joint AEC/NASA Space Nuclear Propulsion Office. The instrumentation was developed and installed by Aberdeen Proving Ground and Sandia Corporation. The data collected included information about the destruct debris velocity, size, weight, and spacial distribution. These data are a satisfactory source term for the computer analysis of the ROVER/NERVA Program safety.

Analysis of the Babcock and Wilcox Full-Size Steam Generator for a Sodium-Water Reaction

Description: An analysis of the effects of a sodium-water reaction in The Babcock & Wilcox Full-Size Steam Generator was conducted. A leak in a tube of the unit would cause a sodium-water reaction which would result in the rapid generation of quantities of reaction products, including hydrogen and high temperature
