An Evaluation of the Substitution of Zircaloy for Stainless Steel in n.s. Savannah Fuel-Element Containers. Summary Report

Description: The possibility of reducing fuel-cycle costs for the N.S. SAVANNAH by replacing the stainless steel fuelelement containers in the permanent reactor core structure by similar containers of a zirconium alloy was investigated. These containers, although not integral parts of the fuel-bearing components, are located within the active core and divide the core into 32 separate channels into which the fuel elements are placed. Areas of investigation included reactor physics, fuel-cycle economics, mate… more

The Crosscorrelation Method of Measuring System Dynamic Response

Description: The basic relations of the crosscorrelation method are presented; and variations of the method for dealing with practical cases for which the idealized relations are inaccurate due to finite experiment length, finite bandwidth of the input signal, and uncorrelated noise in the system response signal are discussed and demonstrated. A Sensitive Radiation Monitor for a Large Laboratory Area

Description: An instrument has been built to survey releases of radioactivity within the 22-acre enclosure of the Savannah River Laboratory. The device consists of a 2-in.diameter x 2-in. sodium iodide scintillation crystal with associated detector counting and recording circuits which provide a permanent record of radioactivity movements within the Laboratory area. The monitor detects signals of 6.9 mu r/hr from a 0.48-curie cobalt-60 source located 265 ft away. (auth)

ROUTINE TESTING AND CALIBRATION PROCEDURES FOR MULTICHANNEL PULSE ANALYZERS AND GAMMA-RAY SPECTROMETERS

Description: Procedures for the routine calibration of gamma-ray scintillation spectrometers and multichannel pulse-height analyzers are presented. A scintillation spectrometer, designed for use of recently developed computer data processing techniques, is described. The performance specifications required of all electronic components in this application, particularly the performance specifications for multi-channel pulse-height analyzers, are treated; and simple tests are described for determining the perf… more

Corrosion Experience with Aluminum Powder Products

Description: Extrusions of aluminum alloy powder products were obtained from several sources and evaluated for corrosion resistance to high-temperature (260-- 350 deg C) water. Several types of tubing impact-extruded by ALCOA were tested. The stronger tabing (M655) failed very rapidly. The weaker tubing suffered extensive localized surface attack and penetration of the corrosion attack along the extrusion direction after prolonged ( approximates 3 months) exposure to 290 deg C water. A precorrosion heat tre… more

MEAN SQUARE VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION MEASUREMENTS WITH NEUTRON-SENSITIVE ION CHAMBERS

Description: The mean square fluctuation voltage in neutron sensitiv ion chambers was measured rather than the d-c current to improve gamma discrimination and eliminate d-c cable leakage interference currents. The circuitry and chambe are described, and performance in the mean square volta mode is compared with that in the d-c current mode. (D.C.W.)

Buckling Measurements-Heavy Natural Uranium Tubular Fuel Assemblies

Description: One-region buckling measurements that were made on a series of D/sub 2/O- moderated lattices of heavy uranium metal tubes in the Process Development Pile at Savannah River Laboratory are presented. The purposes of these measurements are to provide normalization points for lattice bucklings and to extend the study of natural uranium- D/sub 2/O systems. The dependence of buckiing on the moderatorto-fuel ratio is studied for two types of lattices. (R.E.U.)

Measurements of Bucklings and Diffusion Coefficient Changes in D$sub 2$O- Moderated Lattices of Tubular UO$sub 2$ Assemblies

Description: Diffusion coefficients and bucklings are measured for UO/sub 2/ fuel tube assemblies in D/sub 2/O moderated lattices. The effects of H/sub 2/O fogs and air in the coolant channels in place of D/sub 2/O are studied. (T.F.H.)

THE SLUG-ANNULAR FLOW REGIME TRANSITION AT ELEVATED PRESSURE

Description: The annular slug flow regime has been investigated in vertical upflow without heating through the use of an electrical conductivity probe. The Teflon cladding and seals of the probe were found to work to at least 488 deg F. When the inlet velocity was sufficientiy high, the quality at transition was found to be a constant for each pressure going from 8.6% at215 psia to 17.6% at 615 psia. No fully developed bubbly flow was observed. (auth)

Compounds in the Binary Phase Diagrams of the Monovalent Chlorides With the Multivalent Chlorides

Description: The phase-diagram literature was surveyed to the end of 1960. Information about the binary systems of monovalent with multivalent chlorides was observed. Compounds of double chlorides occurring in these systems are listed in tabular form together with the available structural information. (auth)

Physical Limitations on the Measurement of Transient Fields in Air and in Dissipative Media Using Electric and Magnetic Probes

Description: The properties of electric and magnetic probes for the measurement of transient electromagnetic fields in air and in dissipative media are discussed briefly, It is shown that the effective height of an electrically small loop is independent of the ambient medium. This is also virtually true for a thin electrically short dipole (or monopole). If the open-circuit voltage of a magnetic probe can be measured accurately, it is possible (in principle) to reconstruct the time history of the incident m… more

Mechanical Properties of Thin Films. Technical Report No. 29

Description: vention of the Society for Nondestructive Testing. The elastic and plastic properties are reviewed with special emphasis on metal films prepared by vacuum evaporation, although work with both non-metals and other preparation techniques is discussed when it is the only existing data or has particular importance. A definite lack of agreement exists among the various workers and as a result detailed explanations are not possible although general suggestions do exist. The structure of thick polycry… more
