Alpha Particle Radiolysis of Anion Exchange Resins

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Irradiation of 'Dowex' 1, 'Permutit' S-1, and 'Permutit' SK anion exchange resins with alpha particles results in losses in ion exchange capacity and in 'apparent per cent crosslinkage'. The order of decreasing radiolytic stability for these properties in 'Permutit" SX > 'Permutit' S-1 > 'Dowex' 1."

Neutron Dosimetry in and Around Human Phantoms By Use of Nuclear Track Emulsion

Description: The power of nuclear track research emulsion as a fast neutron dosimeter is examined in the exposure of a human phantom to PuBe neutrons. Semiautomatic track scanning and high-speed data analysis obviate the major disadvantages of this dosimeter, and allow the following basic information to be obtained without a serious cost in time: the rulative proton recoil energy spectrum, the absolute differential proton track den sity spectrum, and the average proton recoil energy at various locations in … more

Non-Destructive Analysis of Uranium in Graphite Fuel Elements by Neutron Activation

Description: A method is presented for the determination of uranium (as U/sup 238/) in uraniuni-loaded graphite fuel elenients by a non-destructive, direct radioactivity analysis technique. A 200-cbannel pulse-height analyzer, equipped with a 3 in. x 3 in. NaI(Tl) crystal, is used to measure the Np/sup 239/ radioactivity of the neutron-irradiated samples. The amount of U/sup 238/ in the test samples is deterimined quantitatively by comparing the Np/sup 239/ radioactivity induced in each sample with the Np/s… more

Waste Treatment and Disposal Progress Report for August and September 1961

Description: Work is being carried out to develop and demonstrate on pilot plant scale integrated processes for treatment and disposal of radmoactive wastes. High-level waste calcination, low-level waste treatment, economic and hazards evaluation, engineering evaluation, disposal in deep wells, disposal in natural salt formations, Clinch River studies, fundamental studies of minerals, and White Oak Creek basin study are discussed. SEREIS ELECTROLYTIC DISSOLVER FOR NUCLEAR FUELS. I. SCOPING STUDIES

Description: A dissolver design was demonstrated on a laboratory scale for the electrolytic dissolution of nuclear fuels. Simplified electrodes are used which need not touch the fuel pieces, thus avoiding the usual problems of achieving adequate electrical contact between the fuel and the anode basket. Because a series of electrolytic cells are formed along the length of the dissolver, current efficiency is enormously increased; this technique allows for the use of higher voltage and much lower current than… more

Chemical Processing Technology Quarterly Progress Report, April-June 1961

Description: The Idaho Chemical Processing Plant did not operate on fuel recovery during this period, due to extensive renovation and modiflcation of facilities. Potasslum fluoride was found to be an undesirable additive to the barium precipitating agent used in formation of barium fluozirconate, because of precipitation and loss of uranium, although essentially complete precipitation of zirconium was achieved. Addition of hydrofluoric acid with barium precipitant, to achieve a fluoride/zirconium mole ratio… more

Bibliography and Index on Vacuum and Low Pressure Measurement

Description: From Introduction: "This paper consists essentially of a) a bibliography, b) an author index, and c) an index of the subject matter of the bibliography. While the primary objective is to focus on vacuum measurement, it was believed essential to include in the bibliography articles on vacuum technology in some measure accessory or essential to vacuum measurement. For maximum usefulness, an index of the subject matter of the references has been prepared. The abstract publications listed in the pr… more

Supporting Analysis and Derivation of Dimensional Tolerance Specifications for Core II of SM-1A & PM-2A

Description: A method is presented for translating inspection measurements of fuel plate spacing to obtain minimum coolant channel clearances under reactor operating conditions. Considerations of fuel plate ripple growth and the inspection procedure used are included. The method is applied to establish dimensional tolerance specifications used for the procurement of SM-1A and PM-2A Core II. (auth)

The Dissolution of Iron and Nickel in Dilute Aqua Regia

Description: In laboratory studies the dissolution of iron in dilute nitric - hydrochloric acid mixtures shows an apparent reaction order of -0.62 with respect to HCl. No apparent order value for HNO/sub 3/ can be determined over the concentration ranges studied. Nickel dissolutions show apparent orders of 1.4 with respect to the HCl and 4.2 for HNO/sub 3/. Activation energies determined from 50 to 80 deg C are not constant, ranging from l0 to 20 kcal per mole for both metals. (arth)

VOID COEFFICIENT OF REACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE ISLAND REGION OF THE HFIR

Description: Changes in neutron multiplication caused by voids in the island of the HFlR were calculated and measured experimentally. The results indicated that with only water initially in the island the maximum change in neutron multiplication ( DELTA k/sub max) associated with island voids is 0.032 with a corresponding void fraction of 70%. With a simulated 300 g Pu target in the island DELTA k/sub max/ was 0.0l6, and the corresponding void fraction was 42%. In view of these large changes in neutron mult… more
