Aeroelastic Problems of Airplane Design

Description: The technical memorandum briefly summarizes the growth of interest in aeroelastic phenomena as aircraft speed increased and wing designs changed for faster aircraft. Different types of aircraft vibrations are then introduced, and the mathematical basis for the theory behind them is described. Special attention is given to static oscillations, wing flutter, and the flutter of skin panels. The last section of the memorandum deals with the prevention of flutter by design specifications.

An Airborne Simulator Investigation of the Accuracy of an Optical Track Command Missile Guidance System

Description: Memorandum presenting an airborne missile simulator used to represent visually the predicted flight behavior of the Navy XASM-N-7 Bullpup air-to-surface missile, which is guided along the line of sight to the target by bang-bang radio signals controlled by the pilot of the launch airplane. Quantitative response measurements showed that the simulator gave a good representation of the trajectory and control characteristics predicted for the Bullpup missile, and the simulation appeared plausible t… more

Analysis of particle motions for a class of three-dimensional incompressible laminar boundary layers

Description: From Introduction: "Results obtained in the experimental investigations of secondary flows in turbomachines (refs. 1 to 3) indicate that information concerning three-dimensional laminar boundary-layer behavior can be of practical value in interpreting and correlating measurements of losses in the turbo-machines for design purposes. Reference 4 gives a theoretical analysis of the overturning (more than mainstream turning) of the three-dimensional laminar boundary layer developed on flat or nearl… more

Analysis of Thorex Pilot Plant Radiation Exposures During 1955

Description: The Thorex Pilot Plant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory was operated during 1955, processing reactor-irradiated thorium slugs to recover U233 and thorium and 12 MTR fuel elements to recover U235 and Np237. The radiation exposure received by operating personnel during this period averaged 60 mrcp/man-week. Most radiation exposure was received in areas that were intended to be only slightly or nonradioactive. However, because insufficient decontamination of process solutions was achieved and equi… more

Analysis of turbojet and ram-jet engine cycles using various fuels

Description: From Introduction: "These data have been collected for presentation in this report to illustrate the performance of turbojet and ram-jet cycles utilizing several of the more promising high-energy fuels. Results are presented in terms of engine over-all efficiency and thrust per pound of airflow as functions of flight Mach number."

Centrifugal Casting for Plutonium and Plutonium-Uranium Plates

Description: The objective of this investigation was to determine the feasibility of centrifugal casting to produce fuel element plates suitable for use in a power reactor. Preliminary investigations involving the centrifugal casting of metal plates suitable for use in a power reactor proved to be successful. Lead plates cast at medium speeds contained very few voids and exhibited a surface which conformed very closely to that of the mold.

Coking of JP-4 fuels in electrically heated metal tubes

Description: A limited exploratory investigation of the rate of coking of four JP-4 fuels in electrically heated metal tubes was conducted in order to provide design information for fuel prevaporizers for turbojet-engine combustors. The fuels tested included two production and two minimum-quality JP-4 type fuels. The heating tube was operated at fuel pressures of approximately 500, 400, and 50 pounds per square inch. The operating fuel temperature was varied between approximately 600 degrees and 1200 degree… more

Comparison of theoretical stresses and deflections of multicell wings with experimental results obtained from plastic models

Description: The experimental deflections and stresses of six plastic multicell-wing models of unswept, delta, and swept plan form are presented and compared with previously published theoretical results obtained by the electrical analog method. The comparisons indicate that the theory is reliable except for the evaluation of stresses in the vicinity of the leading edge of delta wings and the leading and trailing edges of swept wings. The stresses in these regions are questionable, apparently because of sim… more
