Plasma Separation Process: Betacell (BCELL) code: User's manual. [Bipolar barrier junction]

Description: The emergence of clearly defined applications for (small or large) amounts of long-life and reliable power sources has given the design and production of betavoltaic systems a new life. Moreover, because of the availability of the plasma separation program, (PSP) at TRW, it is now possible to separate the most desirable radioisotopes for betacell power generating devices. A computer code, named BCELL, has been developed to model the betavoltaic concept by utilizing the available up-to-date sour… more

ITER disruption modeling using TSC (Tokamak Simulation Code)

Description: Design of the ITER vacuum vessel (VV) is driven strongly by disruption-induced forces. We use the Tokamak Simulation Code (TSC) to model disruptions for the ITER physics phase (I{sub p} = 22 MA) and predict the time evolution of currents and forces on the VV. For a plasma vertically displaced to Z{sub axis} = {minus}1.0m before disruption and decaying at a rate of < dI{sub p}/dt > {approx equal} {minus}1.0MA/ms, the induced VV current peaks at 18 MA. The maximum radial VV force F{sub R} is 56 M… more

Medicare Program Integrity: Greater Prepayment Control Efforts Could Increase Savings and Better Ensure Proper Payment

Description: A letter report issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "Use of prepayment edits saved Medicare at least $1.76 billion in fiscal year 2010, but GAO found that savings could have been greater had prepayment edits been more widely used. GAO illustrated this point using analysis of a limited number of national policies and local coverage determinations (LCD), which are established by each Medicare administrative contractor (MAC) to specify coverage rules in its … more

Military Base Realignments and Closures: Estimated Costs Have Increased While Savings Estimates Have Decreased Since Fiscal Year 2009

Description: Correspondence issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "The Department of Defense's (DOD) cost estimates to implement recommendations from the most recent Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) round have steadily increased each budget year since 2005. This BRAC round is the fifth such round undertaken by DOD since 1988 and, by our assessment, it is the biggest, most complex, and costliest BRAC round ever. With this round, DOD plans to execute hundreds of BRAC a… more

Medicaid Integrity Program: CMS Should Take Steps to Eliminate Duplication and Improve Efficiency

Description: A letter report issued by the Government Accountability Office with an abstract that begins "The Medicaid Integrity Group's (MIG) hiring of separate review and audit contractors for its National Medicaid Audit Program (NMAP) was inefficient and led to duplication because key functions were performed by both entities. Review contractors analyze state claims data to identify aberrant claims or billing anomalies while audit contractors conduct postpayment audits to determine if payments to provide… more

High Average Power, High Energy Short Pulse Fiber Laser System

Description: Recently continuous wave fiber laser systems with output powers in excess of 500W with good beam quality have been demonstrated [1]. High energy, ultrafast, chirped pulsed fiber laser systems have achieved record output energies of 1mJ [2]. However, these high-energy systems have not been scaled beyond a few watts of average output power. Fiber laser systems are attractive for many applications because they offer the promise of high efficiency, compact, robust systems that are turn key. Applica… more
