Co-Ordinated Coscheduling in Clusters through a Generic Framework

Description: Communication-driven scheduling is known to be an effective technique to improve the performance of parallel workloads in time-sharing clusters. Although several such coscheduling algorithms have been proposed, to our knowledge, none of these techniques have been adopted in commercial systems. We believe this is primarily because many of these algorithms has not been exhaustively tested on real systems in presence of mixed workloads, and hence, have not been demonstrated as a favorable alternat… more

Nonlinear and Nonideal MHD

Description: The primary efforts this year have focused on exploring the nonlinear evolution of localized interchange instabilities, some extensions of neoclassical tearing mode theory, and developing a model for the dynamic electrical conductivity in a bumpy cylinder magnetic field. In addition, we have vigorously participated in the computationally-focused NIMROD and CEMM projects.

Social Services Block Grant (Title XX of the Social Security Act)

Description: The Social Services Block Grant (SSBG) is a flexible source of funds that states may use to support a wide variety of social services activities. States have broad discretion over the use of these funds. This short report provides background information on the SSBG and tracks relevant legislation and appropriations measures.

Multiscale Thermohydrologic Model Analyses of Heterogeneity and Thermal-Loading Factors for the Proposed Repository at Yucca Mountain

Description: The MultiScale ThermoHydrologic Model (MSTHM) predicts thermohydrologic (TH) conditions in emplacement drifts and the adjoining host rock throughout the proposed nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain. The MSTHM is a computationally efficient approach that accounts for TH processes occurring at a scale of a few tens of centimeters around individual waste packages and emplacement drifts, and for heat flow at the multi-kilometer scale at Yucca Mountain. We present recent MSTHM simulations tha… more

NERSC 'Visualization Greenbook' Future visualization needs of the DOE computational science community hosted at NERSC

Description: This report presents the findings and recommendations that emerged from a one-day workshop held at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) on June 5, 2002, in conjunction with the NERSC User Group (NUG) Meeting. The motivation for this workshop was to solicit direct input from the application science community on the subject of visualization. The workshop speakers and participants included computational scientists from a cross-section of disciplines that use the NERSC facility, as well as … more

Out-of-Core Construction and Visualization of Multiresolution Surfaces

Description: We present a method for end-to-end out-of-core simplification and view-dependent visualization of large surfaces. The method consists of three phases: (1) memory insensitive simplification; (2) memory insensitive construction of a multiresolution hierarchy; and (3) run-time, output-sensitive, view-dependent rendering and navigation of the mesh. The first two off-line phases are performed entirely on disk, and use only a small, constant amount of memory, whereas the run-time system pages in only… more

Workshop on Plant Dispersal and Migration Modeling. Final Report for period June 1, 2001 - May 31, 2002

Description: Global environmental change is causing shifts in the geographical locations of habitats suitable for particular plant species. While it is established that the future distributions of plant species will be strongly influenced by the ability of plants to migrate to sites of suitable habitat, our ability to predict potential and actual migration rates is rudimentary. This workshop organized by the Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) core project of the International Geosphere-Biospher… more

Flow of two-dimensional liquid metal jet in a strong magnetic field.

Description: Steady, two-dimensional flow of a liquid metal jet pouring vertically down from a nozzle in the presence of crossed magnetic and electric fields has been investigated. The magnetic field is supposed to have a single component transverse to the flow. An asymptotic, high Hartmann number model has been used to study a combined effect of surface tension, nonuniform magnetic field, gravity and inertia. Relations have been obtained for a jet issuing from a duct, pouring into a draining duct, pouring … more

Reactive Fluid Flow and Applications to Diagenesis, Mineral Deposits, and Crustal Rocks

Description: The objective is to initiate new: modeling of coupled fluid flow and chemical reactions of geologic environments; experimental and theoretical studies of water-rock reactions; collection and interpretation of stable isotopic and geochemical field data at many spatial scales of systems involving fluid flow and reaction in environments ranging from soils to metamorphic rocks. Theoretical modeling of coupled fluid flow and chemical reactions, involving kinetics, has been employed to understand the… more

Quadrennial Defense Review: Future Reviews Can Benefit from Better Analysis and Changes in Timing and Scope

Description: A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "Congress mandated that every 4 years the Department of Defense (DOD) conduct a review to examine the national defense strategy and its implications for force structure, modernization, infrastructure and the budget. Because the 2001 review, which was issued on September 30, 2001, will have a significant impact on the department's planning and budget, GAO was asked to assess (1) the strengths and weaknesses of D… more
