Design, Construction and Operation Of A High Pressure Flow Loop Reactor For Carbon Sequestration

Description: The Department of Energy’s Albany Research Center has been exploring the possibility of direct mineral carbonation as a means of sequestering carbon dioxide. As part of this research, a three-phase flow through reactor capable of operating at 200°C and 2500 psia was built. The reactor is a plug flow reactor with continuous and complete recycle. The results from this reactor may be used to design a larger and truly continuous flow reactor. This paper describes the design, construction and operat… more

The Second Generation Hypernuclear Spectroscopy at JLab Hall C (E01-011 experiment)

Description: The second generation Λ hypernuclear spectroscopy by (e,e’K{sup +}) reaction has been carried out successfully at JLab in 2005. New configurations, HKS and Tilt method, significantly improved both energy resolution and statistics. Systematic error depend on tuning procedure was estimated by the blind analysis. Analysis is in the final stage. Third generation experiment (JLab E05-115) will be performed in the summer of 2009 w/ new e’ spectrometer (HES).

Accelerating Design of Batteries Using Computer-Aided Engineering Tools

Description: Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is a proven pathway, especially in the automotive industry, to improve performance by resolving the relevant physics in complex systems, shortening the product development design cycle, thus reducing cost, and providing an efficient way to evaluate parameters for robust designs. Academic models include the relevant physics details, but neglect engineering complexities. Industry models include the relevant macroscopic geometry and system conditions, but simplify … more

Battery Ownership Model: A Tool for Evaluating the Economics of Electrified Vehicles and Related Infrastructure

Description: This presentation uses a vehicle simulator and economics model called the Battery Ownership Model to examine the levelized cost per mile of conventional (CV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in comparison with the cost to operate an electric vehicle (EV) under a service provider business model. The service provider is assumed to provide EV infrastructure such as charge points and swap stations to allow an EV with a 100-mile range to operate with driving profiles equivalent to CVs and HEVs. B… more

Comparison of Battery Life Across Real-World Automotive Drive-Cycles

Description: Laboratories run around-the-clock aging tests to try to understand as quickly as possible how long new Li-ion battery designs will last under certain duty cycles. These tests may include factors such as duty cycles, climate, battery power profiles, and battery stress statistics. Such tests are generally accelerated and do not consider possible dwell time at high temperatures and states-of-charge. Battery life-predictive models provide guidance as to how long Li-ion batteries may last under real… more

Examination of a Standardized Test for Evaluating the Degree of Cure of EVA Encapsulation

Description: The curing of cross-linkable encapsulation is a critical consideration for photovoltaic (PV) modules manufactured using a lamination process. Concerns related to ethylene-co-vinyl acetate (EVA) include the quality (e.g., expiration and uniformity) of the films or completion (duration) of the cross-linking of the EVA within a laminator. Because these issues are important to both EVA and module manufacturers, an international standard has recently been proposed by the Encapsulation Task-Group wit… more
