The NACA variable-density wind tunnel

Description: This report describes the redesigned variable-density wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics; it supersedes a previous report that described the original tunnel. The operation of the balance and the method of testing are explained and the method of correcting and presenting airfoil data is described. A summary of the formulas for predicting the characteristics of finite wings from the airfoil section data as they are usually presented is also given.

Derivation of charts for determining the horizontal tail load variation with any elevator motion

Description: From Summary: "The equations relating the wing and tail loads are derived for a unit elevator displacement. These equations are then converted into a nondimensional form and charts are given by which the wing- and tail-load-increment variation may be determined under dynamic conditions for any type of elevator motion and for various degrees of airplane stability. In order to illustrate the use of the charts, several examples are included in which the wing and tail loads are evaluated for a numbā€¦ more

The Determination of Thorium in Uranium-Thorium Alloys, Using Cupferron

Description: Technical report describing that the use of controlled amounts of carbonate, acting both as complexing agent buffer led to a fairly satisfactory procedure for the determination of Th in Th-U alloys, using cupferron. The alloy, dissolved in NHO2, in the presence of HF, is treated with H2SO4 and the mixture is evaporated in SO2 fumes. The solution is diluted and (NH4)2CO2 is added. Th is precipitated from this solution with cupferron. The precipitate is weighed as ThO2 after ignition. An accuraā€¦ more

Analysis of urine samples for iron and S{sup 35}

Description: On August 21, 1948, several smear samples of contamination from the inner rod room at 100-F Area were submitted for beta identification. This contamination was spread as a result of maintenance work on the horizontal rods. Urine sample were deemed advisable for two men who had been exposed while working on the rods. These urine samples were also submitted for beta analyses. The analyses of the smears showed the contamination to consist of primarily S{sup 35} (65%) and Fe{sup 59} (30%)and minor ā€¦ more

Ditching Tests of a 1/18-Scale Model of the Lockheed Constellation Airplane

Description: "Tests were made of a 1/18-scale dynamically similar model of the Lockheed Constellation airplane to investigate its ditching characteristics and proper ditching technique. Scale-strength bottoms were used to reproduce probable damage to the fuselage. The model was landed in calm water at the Langley tank no. 2 monorail. Various landing attitudes, speeds, and fuselage configuration were simulated" (p. 1).

An Isotope Effect in Photosynthesis

Description: In the course of some kinetic studies on photosynthesis of barley seedlings, it has been found that plants utilize C{sup 12}O{sub 2} faster than C{sup 14}O{sub 2}. The plants were placed in a closed system containing an infra-red absorption-cell for the analysis of total CO{sub 2} and an ionization chamber for the determination of C{sup 14}O{sub 2} in the gas phase, both instruments recording continuously. Carbon dioxide, containing about 2% C{sup 14}O{sub 2}, was introduced in the dark and theā€¦ more

Transonic-Flutter Investigation of Wings Attached to Two Low-Acceleration Rocket-Propelled Vehicles

Description: Two low-acceleration transonic-flutter vehicles were launched and flown. The first carried two test wings, one of which fluttered at M = 0.92 at a frequency of 61.4 cycles per second. The reference flutter speed determined from two-dimensional theory for an unswept wing in incompressible flow is conservative when compared to the experimental flutter speed. The second vehicle carried two test wings, one of which failed at M = 0.71 because of low-frequency divergent oscillation. Since this failurā€¦ more

Effect of Temperature on Beta-Ray Measurements

Description: Summary: "This report investigates photographic methods of measuring beta radiation and includes a study of temperature effects on these measurements. Experimental data are submitted to show that an increase in film temperature before and during beta irradiation causes a definite increase in density for the same dosage. Recommendations drawn from experience gained in the experimental works are offered."

Charts for Estimating Performance of High-Performance Helicopters

Description: "Theoretically derived charts showing the profile-drag-thrust ratio are presented for helicopter rotors operating in forward flight and having hinged rectangular blades with a linear twist of 0 degree, 8 degrees, and 16 degrees. The charts, showing the profile-drag characteristics of the rotor for various combinations of pitch angle, ratio of thrust coefficient to solidity, and a parameter representing shaft power input, are presented for tip-speed ratios ranging from 0.05 to 0.50. An Airborne Simulator Investigation of the Accuracy of an Optical Track Command Missile Guidance System

Description: Memorandum presenting an airborne missile simulator used to represent visually the predicted flight behavior of the Navy XASM-N-7 Bullpup air-to-surface missile, which is guided along the line of sight to the target by bang-bang radio signals controlled by the pilot of the launch airplane. Quantitative response measurements showed that the simulator gave a good representation of the trajectory and control characteristics predicted for the Bullpup missile, and the simulation appeared plausible tā€¦ more

On reducing the amplitude of surface waves by source arrays

Description: The Geneva conference of experts stated that surface waves help define the nature of a seismic perturbation. A `phase equalization` method has been proposed by several seismologists to determine the polarity of the source using crustal surface waves. In this report a horizontal source array is designed which will reduce the amplitude of the crustal surface waves by a factor of five. Experimental data from Geophysical Prospecting is cited to support the effectiveness of such arrays. It is thoughā€¦ more
