An Acoustical Comparison of the Tones Produced by Clarinets Constructed of Different Materials

Description: In music education today there is a trend toward a greater understanding of the fundamentals of music. Investigations have been undertaken to determine exactly what a musical tone is made of and why individuals respond to it in certain ways. In all fields these endeavors have led to an objective view of what has been primarily a subjective area. A knowledge of why something happens or of a relationship between factors in a situation is always of ultimate value in teaching situations. In this light many studies have been done concerning musical tone analysis, and particularly, clarinet tone analysis. The clarinet has been the center of tone analysis for some thirty-five years, perhaps because it is an acoustical enigma, or perhaps because there are more clarinetists interested in analyzing their instrument. In any case, analyses have been performed dealing with characteristic partial spectrums, design of the bore in relation to the tone, effect of the reed on tone, effect of the player on tone, and comparisons of tones produced by clarinets made of various substances. This paper deals with the latter of these topics: comparisons of tones produced by clarinets made of various substances. The object of this research is not to prove or disprove a similarity or difference in sound but to identify any relative similarities and differences found in the tonal spectrums by the method of testing presented in this study.

Algebraic Integers

Description: The primary purpose of this thesis is to give a substantial generalization of the set of integers Z, where particular emphasis is given to number theoretic questions such as that of unique factorization. The origin of the thesis came from a study of a special case of generalized integers called the Gaussian Integers, namely the set of all complex numbers in the form n + mi, for m,n in Z. The main generalization involves what are called algebraic integers.

The American Businessman in the Novels and Stories of Henry James

Description: The critical interest in Henry James and his relationship with the "Gilded Age," or the "golden age of American business," indicates that a chronological study of the American businessman, as this character appears in James's fiction, may have some value. The term businessman in this study will simply be understood to mean a maker of money. To consider in detail all of James's writings would exceed the scope of this study; only those novels and stories which deal most obviously and directly with American businessmen will be included.

An Analysis and Comparison of Infant's Speech with their Mother's Speech

Description: The present study is an investigation of certain aspects of the relationship which exists between the development of language of a child and the speech of his mother. An attempt was made to investigate the evolving speech pattern of the child as he is influenced by the speech patterns of his mother. Can one determine the age at which infants begin to develop speech similar to the speech patterns (intonation, phonemic content, distinctive feature content, place and manner of articulation) of their mother's speech?

An Analysis of Distribution Patterns of Amphibians and Reptiles in Texas

Description: The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the distribution of amphibians and reptiles in Texas by means of the methods of Webb and Hagmeier and Stults. An additional graphical analysis was made, including range and range limits which provides a cross-section of faunal change along selected base lines across the state.

The Bass Trombone and Its Use in Selected Works of Smetana, Borodin, Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak

Description: The selected works by the composers studied in this thesis might well stand as illustrative of the normal development of the use of the bass trombone near the close of the nineteenth century. Although notable progress was made by the cited composers in increasing the bass trombone's usefulness in the orchestra, each composer also continued to use the bass trombone as it had been used in previous years, such as in doubling bass parts, harmonic backgrounds, and for strong rhythmic punctuations.

Behavior of a Bi-Material Cylinder Including the Effects of Fracture

Description: A finite element method is presented which utilizes a three dimensional quadrilateral finite element with a stiffness matrix developed in cylindrical coordinated. The method is used to study the behavior of layer cylinders due to asymmetric static thermal loadings. Two types of bonding, rigid and flexible are considered. Additional examples including a pressurized thick walled cylinder and a cylindrical shell under pressure and thermal loadings are presented.
