An Acoustical Comparison of the Tones Produced by Clarinets Constructed of Different Materials

Description: In music education today there is a trend toward a greater understanding of the fundamentals of music. Investigations have been undertaken to determine exactly what a musical tone is made of and why individuals respond to it in certain ways. In all fields these endeavors have led to an objective view of what has been primarily a subjective area. A knowledge of why something happens or of a relationship between factors in a situation is always of ultimate value in teaching situations. In this li… more

Algebraic Integers

Description: The primary purpose of this thesis is to give a substantial generalization of the set of integers Z, where particular emphasis is given to number theoretic questions such as that of unique factorization. The origin of the thesis came from a study of a special case of generalized integers called the Gaussian Integers, namely the set of all complex numbers in the form n + mi, for m,n in Z. The main generalization involves what are called algebraic integers.

The Political Potential of the Negro in Houston, Texas

Description: "The major problem that motivated this study is the fact the Negro in Houston, 1969 does not have any real political power although the potential for such power exists. The major purpose of this study is to seek answers to the following questions. First does the Houston Negro have any real political potential under the present system; if he does, what can he do with it? Second, why are there such wide gaps between the number of Negroes who are eligible to vote and the number that registered to … more

An attempt was made to investigate the evolving speech pattern of the child as he is influenced by the speech patterns of his mother. Can one determine the age at which infants begin to develop speech similar to the speech patterns (intonation, phonemic content, distinctive feature content, place and manner of articulation) of t… more

Metal (II) Complexes with N-Salicylideneamino Acids

Description: Transition metal complexes derived from Schiff bases have rendered an important contribution to the development of modern coordination chemistry. Various stable compounds have been prepared having synthetic, biological, and physicochemical interest. In particular, complexes of salicylaldimines, B-ketoamines, and closely related ligand systems have been investigated.

Coleridge and Kant: Significant Parallels and Contrasts in Ethical and Religious Ideas

Description: One notes that Kant's philosophy became a part of Coleridge's thinking, and his devotion to its principle intensified through the years. Although Kant influenced Coleridge's aesthetics greatly, significant parallels between Kant's moral and ethical principles and Coleridge's religious doctrines are evidence of distinct influence. Particularly interesting are the views these two men had on the being and nature of God; on sin, salvation, and redemption; and on the various aspects of religion and… more

Polycyclic-Aromatic-Hydrocarbon-Induced Alterations in the Physio-Chemical Characteristics of Escherechia Coli Dexyribonucleic Acid

Description: Prior to 1965 the interactions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) had been but moderately studied. It was concluded that, although a controversy existed, an apparent interaction occurred between DNA and certain aromatic hydrocarbon molecules and that the interaction was not an artifact of the reaction system.

Some Studies Pertaining to the Biosynthesis and Metabolism of Asparagine and Lysine in Lactobacillus Arabinosus: I. B-Aspartylhydroxamic Acid: Its Action as a Feedback Inhibitor and a Repressor of Asparagine Synthetase in Lactobacillus Arabinosus II. Purification and Properties of Diaminopimelate Decarboxylase from Lactobacillus Arabinosus

Description: That Lactobacillus arabinosus 17-5, ATCC 8014, can supply its own requirement for the amino acid, lysine, is demonstrated by the fact that the organism is capable of growth in media devoid of lysine. Since the final biosynthetic step in lysine formation in all bacteria studied to date involves the decarboxylation of meso-dlaminopimelic acid (DAP) to produce lysine, it was of interest to determine whether an enzyme catalyzing such a reaction (DAP decarboxylase) is present in L. arabinosus.

Investigation of Certain Accident Data to Determine if It Follows a Poisson Distribution and the Extent to Which It Does

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the medical records of 900 maintenance personnel employed in an aircraft manufacturing plant, and determine if the accident rate followed a Poisson distribution as well as the extent to which it did. It was assumed that the closer the data conformed to the Poisson curve, the more likely it would be that the variance in accident rates was due to "pure chance factors." The investigation of data in this study was expected to reveal information concern… more
