The Canadian Gypsum Industry

Description: From introduction: The production of gypsum is one of the oldest industries in Canada, and in point of gypsum output Canada ranks third among the countries of the world. Gypsum was discovered in the Maritime Provinces at a very early date, but there is no authentic record..of production until about 1822, when gypsum was mined on a small scale in Ontario. Since.then the production has grown slowly but steadily to more than a million tons. In 1928 the output was 1,205,846 short tons, valued at $3,622,007.

The 6-Foot-4-Inch Wind Tunnel at the Washington Navy Yard

Description: Report discussing the 6-foot-4-inch wind tunnel and its auxiliary equipment has proven itself capable of continuous and reliable output of data. The real value of the tunnel will increase as experience is gained in checking the observed tunnel performance against full-scale performance. Such has been the case of the 8- by 8-foot tunnel, and for that reason the comparison in the calibration tests have been presented.

Model Study of the Outlet Structures for the Wappapello Dam

Description: This memorandum constitutes a final report of the study performed at the U. S. Waterways Experiment Station on a model of the outlet works for the Wappapello Dam The model was built undistorted to the linear scale ratio, model-to-prototype, of 1 to 25. The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.

An Autunite Deposit in the Rosamond Hills, Kern County, California

Description: From introduction: An autunite deposit in the SW 1/4 sec. 25, T. 10 N., R. 13 W. San Bernardino meridian, was visited by F. M. Chace on May 6 and 15, 1950. The deposit is about 100 yards west of a north-south country road and is at an altitude of approximately 2,775 feet. The autunite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone strikes N. 35-40 W. and dips 20 -25 SW. It has been traced about 40 feet along the strike at the base of the outcrop and for about 20 feet up the dip. Insufficient work was done to give an accurate idea of the size of the deposit or to determine if other autunite-bearing beds are present.

The Extraction Method of Purification of Uranyl Nitrate

Description: Technical report. Three extractions of a diethyl ether solution of uranyl nitrate with small portions of water are effective in removing rare earths, as is shown by radio-gadolinium and radio-europium tracer experiments. A study of representative ethers, alcohols, ketones, and esters showed that diethyl ether and a mixture of 85% ethyl methyl ketone with 15% xylene are the best solvents for the extraction.

Polarographic Determination of Uranium in Dust Samples

Description: Abstract: "Samples of dust are collected from the atmosphere with a Mine Safety Appliance Co. electrostatic precipitator and analyzed for uranium by means of a dropping mercury electrode apparatus. Two to three micrograms of uranium can be detected in a cell solution volume of 1 ml. Iron, nickel and chromium present in shop dusts do not interfere. Copper may interfere if present in excess but may be removed by a sulfide precipitation. Directions for preparation of cell solution and operation of the Polarograph are given. The polarographic method described may be used for determination of uranium in samples other than atmospheric dusts."

Distribution Coefficient of D₂O Between Triethylamine and Water

Description: Summary: "Water containing 1.8% D2O was distributed between the two liquid phases formed with triethylamine at 20 and 35 C. The triethylamine was removed from each phase by aseotropic distillation with benzene before analyzing the water by determining its density with a quartz float. The ratios of the concentrations of the D2O in the water layer to that in the amino layer were 1.007 and 1.004 at 20 and 35, respectfully. The differences from unity are about the same as the errors of analysis."
