The Nuclear Reactor with a Transverse Air Gap

Description: Diffusion theory and transport theory approaches to the problem of a nuclear reactor with a transverse air gap are compared. It is suggested that the differences in results for thin gaps is due to the fact that diffusion theory does not adequately represent the flux distribution in the immediate vicinity of the gap. For mathematical conveniences previous treatments of the gap problem have made use of fictitious image piles which exaggerate the neutron losses. The extent of the error is estimate… more

Eddy Current Ultrasonic Transducer

Description: In the field of nondestructive testing the ultrasonic test method is used extensively. In this method ultrasonic energy generated by a transducer is caused to enter the test specimen. The effect on the transducer is cause to enter the test specimen. The effect on the transmission or reflection of the ultrasonic energy by differing test specimen structure is used as an indirect measure of test specimen characteristics.

Analysis of a Nuclear Incident in a Redox Dissolver

Description: Since the start of E-metal processing in December, 1958, critical mass control in the Redox dissolvers has been provided by a combination of administrative controls, revised dissolver charging procedures, and new dissolving processes and operation control procedures. These were all based on a maximum allowable charge of E-Metal to the dissolvers which was equivalent to 45 percent of the minimum critical mass.

The Photoproduction of Mesons from Hydrogen

Description: In an effort to gain information on the nature of the photon-meson and photon-nucleon interaction, a study of the artificial production of mesons by photons has been made at the Berkeley synchrotron. The major effort of this research was concentrated on a measurement of the energy and angular distribution of u+-mesons produced when the photons strike a target of liquid hydrogen. Detection of the mesons is accomplished electronically by the technique of delayed coincidence.

End stoppering in mirror machines

Description: Like toroidal confinement, confinement by a potential barrier offers the possibility of unlimited Q if the barrier is good enough. For a barrier height PHI, approximately tau approximately equal to tau/sub collision/ exp PHI/T/sub i/. These notes review previous ideas about how to establish a potential barrier at the ends of a mirror machine and we also discuss a different possibility using mirror confinement itself to establish a barrier utilizing the positive ambipolar potential characteristi… more

Investigations of paleoclimate variations using accelerator mass spectrometry

Description: This project has used Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) {sup 14}C measurements to study climate and carbon cycle variations on time scales from decades to millennia over the past 30,000 years, primarily in the western US and the North Pacific. {sup 14}C dates provide a temporal framework for records of climate change, and natural radiocarbon acts as a carbon cycle tracer in independently dated records. The overall basis for the study is the observation that attempts to model future climate an… more

High temperature alkali corrosion of ceramics in coal gas. Eighth quarterly progress report, June 1, 1993--September 1, 1993

Description: Gaseous alkali corrosion kinetics of Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} were investigated from 950 to 1100{degrees}C in an atmosphere containing 0.98 vol % sodium nitrate vapors. Linear reaction rates from 950 to 1100{degrees}C indicate that the alkali reaction Of Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} is interface-controlled with an activation energy of 199 kJ/mol. Rate controlling step of overall reaction appears to be the oxidation of Si{sub 3}N{sub 4} to SiO{sub 2}.An alkali reaction mechanism, involving a complex dissolution-o… more

Assembly partitioning with a constant number of translations

Description: The authors consider the following problem that arises in assembly planning: given an assembly, identify a subassembly that can be removed as a rigid object without disturbing the rest of the assembly. This is the assembly partitioning problem. Specifically, they consider planar assemblies of simple polygons and subassembly removal paths consisting of a single finite translation followed by a translation to infinity. They show that such a subassembly and removal path can be determined in O(n{su… more

Microscopic physical and chemical properties of graphite intercalation compounds. Final report, August 1, 1984--July 31, 1985

Description: Optical spectroscopy (Raman, FTIR and Reflection ) was used to study a variety of acceptor- and donor-type compounds synthesized to determine the microscopic models consistent with the spectrocsopic results. General finding is that the electrical conduction properties of these compounds can be understood on the basis that the intercalation of atomic and/or molecular species between the host graphite layers either raises or lowers the Fermi level (E{sub F)} in a graphitic band structure.
