Relation of Hydrogen and Methane to Carbon Monoxide in Exhaust Gases From Internal-Combustion Engines

Description: The relation of hydrogen and methane to carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases from internal-combustion engines operating on standard-grade aviation gasoline, fighting-grade aviation gasoline, hydrogenated safety fuel, laboratory diesel fuel, and auto diesel fuel was determined by analysis of the exhaust gases. Two liquid-cooled single-cylinder spark-ignition, one 9-cylinder radial air-cooled spark-ignition, and two liquid-cooled single-cylinder compression-ignition engines were used.

Investigation of a triangular wing in conjunction with a fuselage and horizontal tail to determine downwash and longitudinal-stability characteristics: transonic bump method

Description: Report presenting the results of an experimental investigation of the downwash and longitudinal stability characteristics of a semispan, triangular-wing airplane model with a horizontal tail. Lift, drag, and pitching-moment data re presented for the wing-fuselage combination. Results indicated that the model with the tail on or below the wing-chord plane possessed satisfactory stability characteristics throughout the test range of lift coefficient.

Monitoring Thermal and Resonance Neutron Flux

Description: The monitoring of thermal and resonance neutron flux in a thermal reactor having high flux over periods of time from 1 to 12 months using think Co foils is considered. Special attention is paid to the many correction factors to be applied to the activation data; neutron temperature, effective cadmium cutoff energy, burnout of Co59 and Co60, and decay of Co60. Results on a homogeneity test of 10 mil, 0.08% Co-A1 alloy foils is given.

Formation and Combustion of Smoke in Laminar Flames

Smoke, which consist of tiny mesomorphous crystals tightly packed into popcorn-ball-like particles that agglomerate to give filaments, was found to contain about 5 percent of the hydrogen originally present in the fuel. An Investigation of the Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a 1/10-Size Powered Dynamic Model of the Martin M-267 Patrol-Type Seaplane with Two Forebody Configurations: TED No. NACA DE 376

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a scale powered dynamic model of a patrol-type seaplane designed by the Glenn L. Martin Company. The seaplane had a high-aspect-ratio wing and a T-tail with an all-movable stabilizer. A comparison was made between two forebody configurations, one with a sharp forebody keel in cross section and the other with the forebody cross section rounded in the vicinity of the keel.
