CO + H/sub 2/ reaction over nitrogen-modified iron catalysts. Quarterly technical progress report, January 1-March 31, 1984

Description: We have found that the nitride catalysts lose substantial amounts of nitrogen during the initial minutes of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In order to further study the stability of these catalysts, we have concentrated on the decomposition of the nitride in hydrogen. In addition, we have prepared a range of epsilon-Fe/sub x/N (2 < x < 3) phases. The Moessbauer parameters from these phases will aid in the identification and fitting of the transient epsilon phases formed during the carburization of … more

X-ray L. beta. /sub 2/ /sub 15/ emission spectrum of Ru in Ru(NH/sub 3/)/sub 6/Cl/sub 3/

Description: One of the broader applications of synchrotron radiation has been to EXAFS studies for material structure determination, i.e., for an analysis of x-ray absorption over an extended energy region beyond a core ionization limit. Studies of the near edge structure (XANES) give a different type of information, characteristic of the local symmetry and electronic configuration of the absorbing atom. This type of information is reflected also in the x-ray emission spectra, in particular for transitions… more

Wetland Biomass Production: Emergent Aquatic Management Options and Evaluations

Description: The high yield potential and attractive chemical composition of Typha make it a particularly viable energy crop. The Minnesota research effort has demonstrated that total annual biomass yields equivalent to 30 dry tonnes/ha (13 tons/acre) are possible in planted stands. This compares with yields of total plant material between 9 and 16 dry tonnes/ha (4 to 7 tons/acre) in a typical Minnesota corn field. At least 50% of the Typha plant is comprised of a belowground rhizome system containing 40% s… more

Review of trigger and on-line processors at SLAC

Description: The role of trigger and on-line processors in reducing data rates to manageable proportions in e/sup +/e/sup -/ physics experiments is defined not by high physics or background rates, but by the large event sizes of the general-purpose detectors employed. The rate of e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation is low, and backgrounds are not high; yet the number of physics processes which can be studied is vast and varied. This paper begins by briefly describing the role of trigger processors in the e/sup +/… more

Relativistic effects on cyclotron wave absorption by an energetic electron tail in the PLT tokamak

Description: Electron cyclotron wave absorption by mildly relativistic electrons in the low density regime of the PLT tokamak is investigated. Appreciable wave damping is found for vertical propagation at frequencies of 50, 60, and 70 GHz when the spatially constant cyclotron frequency is 89 GHz. The perpendicular temperature T/sub perpendicular/(v/sub parallel/) of the fast tail is also measured from emission of radiation in the same direction. The results obtained are in satisfactory agreement with the th… more

Investigation of non-intrusive radiometer for entrained gasifier temperature measurement. First quarterly report, October 30, 1983-January 30, 1984

Description: The emphasis during the first quarter has been directed toward evaluating radiometric approaches to find the optimum technique to measure temperature in an entrained gasifier environment. In this regard, it was concluded that while total radiation measurements were helpful in providing designers with total radiation loads to hardware, it was not acceptable as a means of measuring temperature for the gas/particle environment considered. To make the temperature measurements, one, two, and three l… more
