Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Ultrasonic Vibration on Burnout Heat Flux With Boiling Water. Final Summary Report, October 3, 1960-July 31, 1961

Description: Experimental results were obtained on the effect of an ultrasonic field on the burnout heat flux for water flowing at atmospheric pressure, through an annular flow channel formed by a 1/4-in.-diameter electrically heated tube and a concentric glass tube of 3/4-in. ID. The active length of the central heating element was 5 1/2 in. The ultrasonic transducer, which was operated at 25,000 cps and a maximum electrical input of 300 watts, was located at the inlet end of the flow channel. The ultrason… more

Investigations of Radioactive Fuel-Bearing Glasses

Description: "A series of glass compositions containing uranium oxide was investigated to determine fiberizability and physical properties of resultant fibers. The basic properties to be determined were the maximum U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ content in a fiberizable glass and the maximum service temperature of the fibers. Glasses containing 60 wt% U/sub 3/O/sib 8/ were fiberizable; the fibers had strengths of 100,000 psi at 1600 deg F. Fiber-forming equipment was installed at Moun Laboratory to produce glass fibers c… more

Power Trace Analysis Codes SNAVELY and FIP for the IBM-7090

Description: Two programs were prepared for the purpose of obtaining objective statistical information concerning the HRT power trace. The PIP code was used to obtain frequency distributions of power peaks. The SNAVELY program computed the reactivity additions necessary to account for the observed power fluctuations. Frequency distributions were calculated concerning the size and rate of these additions. The behavior of fluid recirculation rates, variation in which could lead to reactivity changes, was also… more

Detection of Distant Explosions by Seismic Measurements in Deep Boreholes

Description: Report presenting the results of a program of research on the depth-well method of obtaining improved signal-to-noise ratios in seismic recordings. Experiments were conducted comparing simultaneous measurements of seismic signals in adjacent cased and open boreholes. Design and performance features of a moving coil geophone for borehole use are described. A balldrop method of geophone calibration is described. The improvement of signal-to-noise ratio with depth for the first ''P'' arrival was d… more

Fuel Cycles and Loading Programming for Water-Cooled Research Reactors

Description: The problems encountered while developing loading methods for the ORNL water-cooled research reactors are discussed. The methods used to program the fuel loading for the LITR and ORR are described as well as the experimental methods that produced the data necessary for the solution of these problems. (auth)

PERSONNEL-EXPOSURE AND CONTAMINATION CONTROL IN THE ROUTINE OPERATION OF THE ORNL RESEARCH REACTORS

Description: ABS>Measures are outlined that are taken to control occupational radiation exposure incurred in the routine operation of a reactor and in the conduct of activities associated with its operation. Those measures taken to minimize the frequency and effects of minor radiation and contamination incidents are also discussed. (C.H.)

Research Studies on Analysis of Ionized Gases. Final Report

Description: The appearance of a large mass 12 peak in pure helium afterglows prompted further investigations, from which it is believed that the maas 12 peak is carbon from a CO impurity, probably a result of outgassing of the walls of the discharge chamber, Mixtures of oxygen with helium and neon have been examined in an attempt to measure the O/sup +/ to O/sub 2/ charge transfer rate. Afterglows in hydrogen, water vapor, and nitrogen-- hydrogen mixtures have also been studied. (auth)

Equipment for Hardness Testing at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The design and testing procedures of two elevatedtemperature hardness testers are described. One device uses a Rockwell tester with a large vertical capacity and a load range of 15 to 150 kg. The tester is equipped with a 900 deg C heating chamber which maintains an argon atmosphere over the specimen and can be laterally displaced by a cross-feed mechanism to allow repeated hardness readings to be made on the same specimen. The second instrument is a microindentation hardness tester for hardnes… more

Pressure Pulses in Rapid Transient Boiling

Description: Investigation of whether the multi-thousand psi pressure pulses that occurred in the BORAX-I and SPERT-I destructive power excursion could have been generated by thermal mechanisms in the geometries of unmolten reactor cores. These pressure pulses were "at least as high as 6,000 psi, and probably higher than 10,000 psi " in BORAX I, and "between 3,000 and 4,000 lb/in" in SPERT I. An experimental investigation was undertaken of pressure pulse generation by purely thermal means.
