THE ISOTRON

Description: Most methods of separating isotopes depend on the use of a large magnetic field. The isotron is an electromagnetic device for separating isotopes, but it effects the separation by the use of radiofrequency voltages instead of magnetic fields. It has the advantage that plane sources of large area can be used instead of the slit sources to which most magnetic methods are limited. Before entering into any discussion of the details, a simplified description of the principles of the method is given.

Project C-431-A Production Facility design computations on outfall structure 1900-C

Description: Project C-431-A includes the design of the C Water Plant outfall structure. This report documents design assumptions and the design of the spillway, outfall sewers, spillway chute, trash racks, walkways, stop log and trash rack slots, main sewer, and retention sewers. The spillway capacity is to be 268,000 gpm with a crest elevation at 429.0. This flow capacity is composed of flow from the 105-C Retention Basin (80,000 gpm), 105-B Retention Basin (45,000 gpm), and the 190-C Area main sewer (143… more

Effect of pH and Concentration of Ammonium Persulfate on Colorimetric Determination of Nickel by Dimethylglyoxime Method

Description: The following report records the study of the optimum pH of the method of the colorimetric dimethylglyoxime for nickel before the addition of oxidant and the concentration of ammonium persulfate needed to insure complete oxidation to higher nickel valence states and thus prevent precipitation of less soluble nickelous salt that was made. Results of this study is presented in Table 1.

An Investigation of the Stream-Tube Power Losses and an Improvement of the Diffuser-Entrance Nose in the Langley 8-Foot Transonic Tunnel

Description: Report presenting surveys of the distribution of total pressure, total temperature, and static pressure at a number of stations in the slotted test section and diffuser of the transonic tunnel with early and improved diffuser-entrance noses installed at the ends of the slots. Results regarding power losses with the original diffuser-entrance nose, development of revised diffuser-entrance noses, and energy losses in the tunnel with the final diffuser-entrance nose are provided.

Separation of Isotopes by Mass Diffusion - Unequal Diffusion Coefficients

Description: From summary: "Equations for determination of stage enrichment factor and screen area for the ideal case of 'zero back-pressure' are derived...Comparison with the theory of Benedict is made together with recommendations for application of his results for non-zero back pressure to the case under consideration."

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Entrance Width-to-Height Ratio on the Performance of an Auxiliary Scoop-Type Inlet at Mach Numbers From 0 to 1.3

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of variable-area auxiliary inlets intended to provide for the variation of engine air requirements with speed and altitude. Three auxiliary scoop inlets were tested in combination with a nose inlet at a range of Mach numbers tested at zero angle of attack.

Flight Determination of the Pressure Recovery and Drag Characteristics of a Twin Side-Inlet Model at Transonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting free-flight and free-jet testing of a twin side-inlet configuration, including a pilot's canopy and a wheel-well fairing, between a range of Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.55. Using side inlets provides two important advantages: the inlet can be located closer to the engine and it frees up the nose for other uses. Results regarding the effects of oscillating flow, external-drag coefficient, and total-pressure recovery are provided.

Progress Report, Subcontract No. 501-Under W7405-eng-26

Description: This is a progress report for the period of April 1, 1953 to June 30, 1953. Results reported by the Naval Research Laboratory indicate that the pressures above are less than this laboratory reported previously and that equilibrium, as measured by a constant gas pressure, may be reached in a relatively short time.

Slotted-boundary interference effects on wedge airfoils at low supersonic Mach numbers

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation of pressure disturbances caused by the reflection of two-dimensional shock waves from a slotted boundary at Mach numbers between 1.0 and 1.5. Simple-wedge airfoils with three different apex angles were used to generate shock waves and the static pressures ere measured at various points along the surface of each airfoil.

Test of an aerodynamically heated multiweb wing structure (MW-1) in a free jet at Mach number 2

Description: Report presenting testing of a multiweb wing structure, representing an airplane or missile wing, under simulated supersonic flight conditions to determine the transient temperature distribution. The aerodynamic loads caused the model to fail near the end of the test. The failure is analyzed and it is determined that the model failed as a result of the combined action of aerodynamic heating and loading.
