Suggested Major Equipment for NPR Water Quality Control Labs

Description: Two water quality control labs are being provided for the the NPR. One, a "cold" lab, is located in the183 Building adjacent to the control room. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for quality control of the output of the filter plant and the demineralizer plant. The other, a "hot" lab, is located in the 190 Building. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for the quality control of the primary and secondary coolants, and the moderator coolant.

Preliminary Internal Performance Data for a Variable-Ejector Assembly on the XJ79-GE-1 Turbojet Engine, 2, Afterburning Configurations

Description: Internal performance of an XJ79-GE-1 variable ejector was experimentally determined with the primary nozzle in two representative after-burning positions. Jet-thrust and air-handling data were obtained in quiescent air for 4 selected ejector configurations over a wide range of secondary to primary airflow ratios and primary-nozzle pressure ratios. The experimental ejector data are presented in both graphical and tabulated form.

Experimental Investigation of the Effect of Entrance Width-to-Height Ratio on the Performance of an Auxiliary Scoop-Type Inlet at Mach Numbers From 0 to 1.3

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of variable-area auxiliary inlets intended to provide for the variation of engine air requirements with speed and altitude. Three auxiliary scoop inlets were tested in combination with a nose inlet at a range of Mach numbers tested at zero angle of attack.

Flight Determination of the Pressure Recovery and Drag Characteristics of a Twin Side-Inlet Model at Transonic Speeds

Description: Report presenting free-flight and free-jet testing of a twin side-inlet configuration, including a pilot's canopy and a wheel-well fairing, between a range of Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.55. Using side inlets provides two important advantages: the inlet can be located closer to the engine and it frees up the nose for other uses. Results regarding the effects of oscillating flow, external-drag coefficient, and total-pressure recovery are provided.

Quarterly Progress Report for the Period April 1, 1958 to June 30, 1958

Description: The principle progess during the second quarter of 1958 consisted of: accelerating the planning, scheduling, and coordination of the process-water and in-pile test loop irradiation programs; performing two-enrichment non-cycled core studies to determine the improvement in the radial hot channel factor over that which would apply for a uniform core; recalculating the contribution of control to the temperature coefficient using better thermal constant values and an improved method of obtaining co… more

Experimental Investigation of Air-Cooled Turbine Blades in Turbojet Engine: 1: Rotor Blades With 10 Tubes in Cooling-Air Passages

Description: Report presenting an investigation to experimentally determine the effectiveness of air cooling several turbine-blade configurations in a turbojet engine. The results obtained with the first configuration, which was a hollow blade shell with 10 tube inserts, are presented. A description of factors leading to the design are provided as well as the correlated cooled-blade temperatures, solid-blade temperatures, cooling-air-temperature increase through radial passages, and blade failure are provid… more

Preliminary Report of Critical Experiments in Slab Geometry

Description: The critical parameters of aqueous UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ solutions enriched to 90% U/sup 235/ in various arrays of interacting slab geometries have been determined for a single concentration. Critical solution heights for various configurations of three nominally 3-in. thick Al slab vessels and one 6-in. Al slab vessel were determined. (T.R.H.)

Test of an aerodynamically heated multiweb wing structure (MW-1) in a free jet at Mach number 2

Description: Report presenting testing of a multiweb wing structure, representing an airplane or missile wing, under simulated supersonic flight conditions to determine the transient temperature distribution. The aerodynamic loads caused the model to fail near the end of the test. The failure is analyzed and it is determined that the model failed as a result of the combined action of aerodynamic heating and loading.
