Characterization of aerosols produced by surgical procedures

Description: In many surgeries, especially orthopedic procedures, power tools such as saws and drills are used. These tools may produce aerosolized blood and other biological material from bone and soft tissues. Surgical lasers and electrocautery tools can also produce aerosols when tissues are vaporized and condensed. Studies have been reported in the literature concerning production of aerosols during surgery, and some of these aerosols may contain infectious material. Garden et al. (1988) reported the pr… more

An analytical electron distribution function for inelastic collisions in a uniform gas with time varying electric field

Description: The desire for improved control over electric discharge phenomena in a wide variety of scientific, technological, manufacturing, and waste processing activities spurs the development of non-equilibrium, non-uniform, and time dependent models. This paper addresses the situation of slightly ionized, spatially uniform gas with a time varying electric field, and in which inelastic collisions occur. The purpose here is to present a reasonably consistent, and reasonably accessible analytical result f… more

Description: Our ARM goal is to help improve both longwave and shortwave models used in GCMs by providing improved radiometric shortwave data. The inference of cloud cover and optical properties of clouds is another goal of this research effort. At the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC) in Albany, New York, we are acquiring downwelling shortwave, including direct and diffuse irradiance, at six wavelengths, plus downwelling longwave, upwelling and downwelling broadband shortwave, and aerosol optical… more

Research program on fractured petroleum reservoirs. 2nd Quarterly report, April 1, 1994--June 30, 1994

Description: Gas-oil gravity drainage experiments in a layered system which were carried out in 1993 are analyzed. The analysis reveals that the shape of the gas relative permeability governs the arrival of the gas phases at the interface between the layers. Based on the analysis of the experiments, it is concluded that, unlike gravity drainage in homogeneous media, the gravity drainage performance of layered media for the unstable downward gas fingering case, is sensitive to the gas relative permeability c… more

Theory, modeling and simulation: Annual report 1993

Description: Developing the knowledge base needed to address the environmental restoration issues of the US Department of Energy requires a fundamental understanding of molecules and their interactions in insolation and in liquids, on surfaces, and at interfaces. To meet these needs, the PNL has established the Environmental and Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) and will soon begin construction of a new, collaborative research facility devoted to advancing the understanding of environmental molecular sci… more

Development of hollow fiber catalytic membrane reactors for high temperature gas cleanup. Final report, September 1989--March 1994

Description: The objective of this project was to develop economically and technically viable catalytic membrane reactors for high temperature, high pressure gaseous contaminant control in Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems. These catalytic membrane reactors decompose H{sub 2}S and separate the reaction products. The reactors were designed to operate in the hostile process environment of the IGCC systems, and at temperatures ranging from 500 to 1000{degrees}C. Severe conditions encountere… more

Improved techniques for fluid diversion in oil recovery. Quarterly technical progress report, April 1, 1994--June 30, 1994

Description: This three-year project has two general objectives. The first objective is to compare the effectiveness of gels in fluid diversion with those of other types of processes. Several different types of fluid-diversion processes will be compared, including those using gels, foams, emulsions, and particulates. The ultimate goals of these comparisons are to (1) establish which of these processes are most effective in a given application and (2) determine whether aspects of one process can be combined … more

Effect of pretreating of host oil on coprocessing. Quarterly progress report, April 1, 1994--June 30, 1994

Description: The principal objective of this research is to gain information on the role that host petroleum-derived oils (1000{degrees}F+), as well as that of catalytically treated host oils, play when used as liquefaction solvents in coprocessing with coal. The host oil will be extensively characterized and then pretreated in a number of ways which involve catalytic reactions such as hydrogenation and hydrocracking. The pretreated oils will then be characterized by elemental analysis, catalytic dehydrogen… more

Closure Report for Underground Storage Tank 2310-U at the Pine Ridge West Repeater Station

Description: This document represents the Closure Report for Underground Storage Tank (UST) 2310-U at the Pine Ridge West Repeater Station, Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Tank 2310-U was a 200-gal gasoline UST which serviced the emergency generator at the Repeater Station. The tank was situated in a shallow tank bay adjacent to the Repeater Station along the crest of Pine Ridge. The tank failed a tightness test in October 1989 and was removed in November 1989. The purpose of this report is to d… more

Turbulent transport across invariant canonical flux surfaces

Description: Net transport due to a combination of Coulomb collisions and turbulence effects in a plasma is investigated using a fluid moment description that allows for kinetic and nonlinear effects via closure relations. The model considered allows for ``ideal`` turbulent fluctuations that distort but preserve the topology of species-dependent canonical flux surfaces {psi}{sub {number_sign},s} {triple_bond} {integral} dF {center_dot} B{sub {number_sign},s} {triple_bond} {gradient} {times} [A + (m{sub s}/q… more

Description: This document provides the characterization information and interprets the data for Double-Shell Tank AP-103. The results of the analyses have been compared to the dangerous waste codes in the Washington Dangerous Waste Regulations (WAC 173-303). This assessment was conducted by comparing tank analyses against dangerous waste characteristics (D waste codes) and against state waste codes. It did not include checking tank analyses against U, P, F, or K waste codes since application of these codes… more

Properties of vitrified Rocky Flats TRUW with different waste loadings

Description: One of the major waste streams at the Idaho National Laboratory (INEL) is a combination of the Rocky Flats Plant 1st and 2nd stage sludges (hydrated metal oxides or H-series), which constitutes about 20 wt % of the buried waste. A similar mass fraction is in interim storage. The buried waste is commingled with about five times as much soil that has become contaminated as the containers have deteriorated. The purpose of this paper is to report on waste form property variations of the H-series wa… more

Potential utilization of SRS uranium with high U-236 content as commercial LWR fuel (Study of neutronic and safety characteristics)

Description: The neutronics and safety characteristics of a PWR core loaded with fuel made from SRS recovered uranium have been analyzed. These results are compared to those of a standard commercial fuel loaded core. For both cases, equilibrium cycle three-dimensional core models have been developed to accurately quantify the fuel cycle penalty factor associated with high U-236 content in SRS derived fuel. A 0.28 wt% over enrichment is required to compensate for each 1.0 wt% of U-236 in SRS derived fuel in … more
