Search for the neutrinoless muon decay. mu. /sup +/. -->. e/sup +/. gamma

Description: Separate muon, electron, and tau numbers are conserved in the minimal standard model of electroweak interactions with massless neutrinos. However, in many extensions to the standard model, separate lepton numbers are not expected to be conserved quantities. A new search for muon number non-conserving processes has been undertaken at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), specifically to look for three neutrinoless decay modes of the muon. The search for the decay of a muon to an electro… more

Electron energy loss spectroscopy of CH/sub 3/N/sub 2/CH/sub 3/ adsorbed on Ni(100), Ni(111), Cr(100), Cr(111)

Description: A study of the adsorption of CH/sub 3/N/sub 2/CH/sub 3/ on Ni(100), Ni(111), Cr(100), and Cr(111) using high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is presented. Under approximately the same conditions of coverage, the vibrational spectra of CH/sub 3/N/sub 2/CH/sub 3/ on these four surfaces are quite distinct from one another, implying that the CH/sub 3/N/sub 2/CH/sub 3/-substrate interaction is very sensitive to the physical and electronic structure of each surface. In addition to… more

Bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck code for stellarator transport

Description: A computer code for solving the bounce-averaged Fokker-Planck equation appropriate to stellarator transport has been developed, and its first applications made. The code is much faster than the bounce-averaged Monte-Carlo codes, which up to now have provided the most efficient numerical means for studying stellarator transport. Moreover, because the connection to analytic kinetic theory of the Fokker-Planck approach is more direct than for the Monte-Carlo approach, a comparison of theory and nu… more

Three-dimensional stellarator equilibrium as an ohmic steady state

Description: A stable three-dimensional stellarator equilibrium can be obtained numerically by a time-dependent relaxation method using small values of dissipation. The final state is an ohmic steady state which approaches an ohmic equilibrium in the limit of small dissipation coefficients. We describe a method to speed up the relaxation process and a method to implement the B vector . del p = 0 condition. These methods are applied to obtain three-dimensional heliac equilibria using the reduced heliac equat… more

Linear aperture criteria for a standard cell lattice

Description: Among the parameters which need to be specified in the design of the SSC are the cell length (l/sub c/) and the coil diameter (d/sub c/). The quality of the magnetic field of the bending magnets, reflected in both small multipole coefficients and a small sigma for these coefficients, improve as d/sub c/ increases. Similarly the smaller ..beta.. resulting from a decreased l/sub c/ results in an increased admittance (for a constant size beam pipe). Unfortunately increasing d/sub c/ and/or l/sub c… more

Parabolic approximation method for fast magnetosonic wave propagation in tokamaks

Description: Fast magnetosonic wave propagation in a cylindrical tokamak model is studied using a parabolic approximation method in which poloidal variations of the wave field are considered weak in comparison to the radial variations. Diffraction effects, which are ignored by ray tracing mthods, are included self-consistently using the parabolic method since continuous representations for the wave electromagnetic fields are computed directly. Numerical results are presented which illustrate the cylindrical… more

Fusion Power Demonstration III

Description: This is the third in the series of reports covering the Fusion Power Demonstration (FPD) design study. This volume considers the FPD-III configuration that incorporates an octopole end plug. As compared with the quadrupole end-plugged designs of FPD-I and FPD-II, this octopole configuration reduces the number of end cell magnets and shortens the minimum ignition length of the central cell. The end-cell plasma length is also reduced, which in turn reduces the size and cost of the end cell magnet… more

Investigation of the skin depth effect of a metallic coating on a ceramic beampipe inside a kicker

Description: Inside a kicker magnet, metallic beampipe cannot be used because it will screen off the rapid rising of the kicker's magnetic field. When a ceramic beampipe is used, one usually coats the inside with a thin layer of metal so as to carry at least part of the beam's image current and to prevent static charge buildup. The purpose of this article is to investigate whether such a coating will alter the risetime constant of the magnetic field significantly, whether such a coating can withstand the st… more

Bioenergetics of Juvenile Salmon During the Spring Outmigration, 1983 Annual Report.

Description: Main stem reservoirs in the Columbia River Basin may have increased the energy demands of smolts during outmigration by prolonging migration and exposing smolts to seasonally rising water temperatures. A bioenergetic model for spring chinook salmon smolts (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is being developed to test these hypotheses. Results have thus far indicated that the seaward migration can be separated into two distinct phases. Phase I can be described as a period of intense smolt development in … more
