Failure Analysis of Cracked Head Spray Piping from the Dresden Unit 2 Boiling Water Reactor

Description: Several sections of Type 304 stainless steel head spray piping, 6.25 cm (2.5 in.) in diameter, from the Dresden Unit 2 Boiling Water Reactor were examined to determine the nature and causes of coolant leakages detected during hydrostatic tests. Extensive pitting was observed on the outside surface of the piping, and three cracks, all located at a helical stripe apparently rubbed onto the outer surface of the piping, were also noted. Metallographic examination revealed that the cracking had initā€¦ more

Commercial production of ethanol in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. Final Report

Description: The purpose of this study is to assess the commercial feasibility of producing between 76 and 189 million liters (20 and 50 million gallons) of ethanol annually in the San Luis Valley, Colorado using geothermal energy as the primary heat source. The San Luis Valley is located in south-central Colorado. The valley is a high basin situated approximately 2316 meters (7600 feet) above sea level which contains numerous warm water wells and springs. A known geothermal resource area (KGRA) is located ā€¦ more

Ground Water in the Northeast Part of Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Bagdad Area, California

Description: Purpose and scope: The U.S. Marine Corps conducts training maneuvers in the study area. Lack of a local source of water has severely limited the utilization of the area. In the past, limited quantities of water have been transported to the area by truck or helicopter. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of obtaining a supply of ground water in the area for use when field maneuvers are being conducted. The major effort for this study was concentrated on the part within theā€¦ more

Ground-Water Monitoring in the Tucson Copper Mining District

Description: Abstract: Ground-water and tailings pond monitoring in the Upper Santa Cruz Basin Mines Task Force's Special Studies Area has been performed to determine the nature and extent of aquifer contamination from copper tailings pond's recharge in the basin. A monitoring program for each of three mining areas (Mines A, B, and D) was developed. Analysis of data shows that recharge from Mine A's ponds has caused increased hardness, sulfate and total dissolved solids in local ground water. However, pumpaā€¦ more

Some Scoping Experiments for a Space Reactor

Description: Some scoping experiments were performed to evaluate fuel performance in a lithium heat pipe reactor operating at a nominal 1500K heat pipe temperature. Fuel-coolant and fuel-coolant-clad relationships showed that once a failed heat pipe occurs temperatures can rise high enough so that large concentrations of uranium can be transported by the vapor phase. Upon condensation this uranium would be capable of penetrating heat pipes adjacent to the failed pipe. The potential for propagation of failurā€¦ more
