HASL Aerial Survey System

Description: Radioactive debris from nuclear detonations may fall out over an extensive area. A rapid evaluation of the distribution of such surface contamination cam be obtained by an aircraft mounted detector. The gamma field measured in the aircraft can be related to the intensity on the ground. The HASL Top Hat'' system measures the radiation intensity, in an aircraft, at any altitude up to 1500 feet. The data are continuously compensated to the reading that would be obtained if the measurements were ta… more

The Economics and Hazard Potential of Waste Disposal

Description: The two most important considerations in the disposal of radioactive wastes are safety and economy. All other steps in the waste disposal complex must be tuned to accomplish these two goals. In general, the hazardous waste in the nuclear power complex affect the cost of the nuclear power reactor fuel cycle, the general environment since disposal must exclude radioactivity from the environment for over 500 years, the costs and/or methods of waste treatment including fission product utilization, … more

Prediction of Creep Failures of Lead in Bending From Tensile Data

Description: The creep rupture rates of lead beams in bending tests have been predicted within a factor of 3 based on tensile creep data. All of the specimens lasted longer than predicted. The underestimates in failure times correspond to over estimates in the maximum fibre stresses by about ten percent. If the nominal stresses reported in the tensile data are corrected for the fact that the tests were conducted under constant load instead of constant stress, the failure times of the bend specimens appear t… more

Nuclear Decay Schemes in the Actinium Family

Description: Abstract: "With magnetic alpha-particle and electron high-resolution spectrographs and scintillation gamma-ray spectrometers, a study was made of the nuclear decay of a number of members of the actinium family - U-235, Th-227, Ra-223, Em-219, Po-215, and Bi-211. Decay schemes are presented for each of these nuclides, together with such correlations as are possible with present theoretical nuclear models. The decay scheme of U-235 and a portion of that of Th-227 are interpretable in terms of the… more

Tests on Models of Nuclear Reactor Elements - Head Losses in Core Sub-Assemblies

Description: Losses have been determined for flow through models of various proposed core sub-assemblies as part of a study of the elements of a nuclear reactor. Six core sections and two? axial blanket sub-assemblies have been compared on the basis of drop in piezometric. head or pressure drop. The core sub-assemblies are composed of an entrance nozzle, a lower axial blanket section, the core section, an upper axial blanket section, and a short section for the handling lug. The four parts of the sub-assemb… more

The Effect of D20 on Survival of Mice with Ascites Tumor

Description: The effect of deuterium oxide (D{sub 2}O) on the survival of mice inoculated with Ehrlich's mouse ascites tumor has been studied. Mice maintained on 25% and 30% D{sub 2}O drinking water showed an improved survival time of about 6 days whereas 40% D{sub 2}O drinking water had no effect on survival time. The effect is interpreted in terms of inhibition of tumor cell division and systemic toxicity.
