Increased oil production and reserves from improved completion techniques in the Bluebell Field, Uinta Basin, Utah. Quarterly technical progress report, April 1, 1996--June 30, 1996, 11th Quarter of the project

Description: The objective of this project is to increase oil production and reserves in the Uinta Basin by demonstrating improved completion techniques. Low productivity of Uinta Basin wells is caused by gross production intervals of several thousand feet that contain perforated thief zones, water-bearing zones, and unperforated oil-bearing intervals. Geologic and engineering characterization and computer simulation of the Green River and Wasatch formations in the Bluebell field will determine reservoir he… more

A Perturbation Method for Solving the Angle Dependent Nucleon-Meson Cascade Equations

Description: A method is described for obtaining an approximate solution to the equations describing a nucleon-meson cascade by using the angular dependence of the secondary particle production kernels as a perturbation. The usefulness of the method lies in the fact that in a slab geometry the equations that must be solved numerically are essentially the same as those that are used in the straight-ahead approximation and have been solved previously. Letter on intent to build an off-axis detector to study {nu}{sub mu}{yields}{nu}{sub e} oscillations with the NuMI neutrino beam. Version 6.0

Description: The question of neutrino masses is of fundamental importance. Neutrino oscillations seem to be the only tool available to us to unravel the pattern of neutrino masses and, perhaps, shed some light on the origin of masses in general. The NuMI neutrino beam line and the MINOS experiment represent a major investment of US High Energy Physics in the area of neutrino physics. the forthcoming results could decisively establish neutrino oscillations as the underlying physics mechanism for the atmosphe… more

Suggested Major Equipment for NPR Water Quality Control Labs

Description: Two water quality control labs are being provided for the the NPR. One, a "cold" lab, is located in the183 Building adjacent to the control room. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for quality control of the output of the filter plant and the demineralizer plant. The other, a "hot" lab, is located in the 190 Building. Its primary purpose is to provide facilities for the quality control of the primary and secondary coolants, and the moderator coolant.

Advanced Flue Gas Conditioning as a Retrofit Upgrade to Enhance Pm Collection From Coal-Fired Electric Utility Boilers, Quarterly Technical Report: April-June 2003

Description: The U.S. Department of Energy and ADA Environmental Solutions are engaged in a project to develop commercial flue gas conditioning additives. The objective is to develop conditioning agents that can help improve particulate control performance of smaller or under-sized electrostatic precipitators on utility coal-fired boilers. The new chemicals will be used to control both the electrical resistivity and the adhesion or cohesivity of the fly ash. There is a need to provide cost-effective and saf… more

Automobile and Light Truck Fuel Economy: The CAFE Standards

Description: One of the least controversial provisions of the Energy Policy and Conservation Act of 1975 (P.L. 94-163) established corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for new passenger cars. This report presents a brief background and analysis regarding the price of crude oil that brought into sharp focus the fuel inefficiency of U.S. automobiles. The report also discusses the previous issues and the most recent developments regarding CAFE.

241-AZ Tank Farm Construction Extent of Condition Review for Tank Integrity

Description: This report provides the results of an extent of condition construction history review for tanks 241-AZ-101 and 241-AZ-102. The construction history of the 241-AZ tank farm has been reviewed to identify issues similar to those experienced during tank AY-102 construction. Those issues and others impacting integrity are discussed based on information found in available construction records, using tank AY-102 as the comparison benchmark. In the 241-AZ tank farm, the second DST farm constructed, bo… more

Operation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Anodes With Practical Hydrocarbon Fuels

Description: This work was carried out to achieve a better understanding of how SOFC anodes work with real fuels. The motivation was to improve the fuel flexibility of SOFC anodes, thereby allowing simplification and cost reduction of SOFC power plants. The work was based on prior results indicating that Ni-YSZ anode-supported SOFCs can be operated directly on methane and natural gas, while SOFCs with novel anode compositions can work with higher hydrocarbons. While these results were promising, more work w… more

Tank monitor and control system (TMACS) performance analysis - under steady-state conditions

Description: A means to predict the performance impacts to the TMACS computer system prior to further increases in the TMACS point configuration is studied. A series of CPU utilization measurements are made on the TMACS production and development computers. These measurements are under steady-state operating conditions for I/O point processing and remote terminal support. The data from these measurements are used to derive formulas that are then used to project CPU utilization for other configuration profile… more

Country-of-Origin Labeling for Foods

Description: Federal law requires most imports, including many food items, to bear labels informing the “ultimate purchaser” of their country of origin. Meats, produce, and several other raw agricultural products generally have been exempt. The omnibus farm law (P.L. 107-171) signed on May 13, 2002, contains a requirement that many retailers provide, starting on September 30, 2004, country-of-origin labeling (COOL) on fresh fruits and vegetables, red meats, seafood, and peanuts. The program is voluntary unt… more
