K Reactor moderator distortion study

Description: Irradiation-induced moderator distortion has plagued the Hanford reactors from their earliest days until the present. The first-manifestation of graphite distortion was in the form of expansion of the B, D and F stacks. It was found that expansion was very temperature-dependent and could be reversed by raising the graphite operating temperature. The DR, H, C and K Reactors were designed with provisions to minimize, or accommodate expansion. It was not until after the K Reactors had been designe… more

Subsurface Fracturing from Shoal Nuclear Detonation: Final Report

Description: Abstract: A fracture-evaluation experiment in conjunction with the Shoal nuclear detonation in granite was undertaken to determine the extent of subsurface shock-induced fractures. Preshot and postshot geophysical logs in a hole drilled from the surface through the zone of fractures indicated that fractures extended at least 5.3 cavity radii laterally from the point of detonation. Quantitative measurements of permeability increases resulting from the detonation were planned, but were not comple… more

Design Considerations Of Ultrahigh Vacuum Systems For Metallurgical Applications

Description: Under the stimulus of electronic materials development - particularly thin-film studies - and the need for space environmental simulation chambers, a very rapid increase in the availability of industrial-sized vacuum components and systems operable in the ultrahigh vacuum range has taken place in the last three years. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the design considerations of ultrahigh vacuum systems for metallurgical applications.

Physics calculations for mixed PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} NPR loadings

Description: At the request of NRD (NPR Physics Subsection) a study was initiated to determine the physics characteristics of various plutonium-uranium composites as fuel for the NPR. From this study, the PuO{sub 2}-UO{sub 2} fuel system was selected to receive major attention. The effect of adding a burnable poison, B-10, in intimate contact with the mixed oxide fuel was also is to be considered. The present report summarizes the results of these investigations.

POLARIZATION IN PROTON-PROTON SCATTERING USING A POLARIZED TARGET.Part I. 0.330 to 0.740 GeV Part II 1.70 to 6.15 GeV

Description: Using the Berkeley polarized-proton target, we have measured the polarization parameter P({theta}) for proton-proton (p-p) scattering. The measurements were obtained at beam kinetic energies of 0.330, 0.680, and 0.740 GeV at the 184-in. synchrocyclotron and 1.70, 2.85, 3.50, 4.00, 5.05, and 6.15 GeV at the Bevatron. The angular regions measured were from 20 to 100 degrees center of mass; the square of the four-momentum transfer ranged from 0.1 to 0.8 (GeV/c){sup 2}.

Design of a Basin-Type Solar Still

Description: From Introduction: "This report describes the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of a particular solar still that has been shown to be a practical for converting saline water to fresh water at low cost in localities where there is a reasonable amount of sunshine. A series of photographs is included which illustrate the steps in constructing a still."

Levels of Psychological Health Related to the Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Test

Description: The purpose of the present study is to develop an operationally defined standard of psychological health which will be proposed as: 1) one of the goals of psychotherapy; 2) a device for aiding in the evaluation of psychotherapy, and 3) a tool for screening those individuals in the general population who are in need of counseling in order to maintain their mental health.

Wire Chamber -- Computer System

Description: First paragraph of report: M. Neumann and H. Sherrard reported the development of a wire spark chamber experiment toward receiving digitized spark information. Since late 1962 our effort has been directed toward a wire-chamber with a core memory, using standard ferrite cores, and toward an on-line operation between spark chamber and computer.

Design criteria for coolant backup three remaining smaller reactors. Revision 1

Description: This document defines the objectives, bases, and functional requirements that shall govern the preparation of design of the coolant backup system for the three remaining smaller reactors. This project will increase the reliability of the coolant backup facility at B Area by providing an independent last-ditch coolant system to B and C Reactors. The reliability of the last-ditch system for D Reactor will also be improved in that the present F and H leg of the export system will no longer be a pa… more

THE STRUCTURE OF THE SO-CALLED ''ETHYLMETAPHOSPHATE'' (LANGHELDESTER)

Description: Phosphorus pentoxide reacts with ether to form bicyclo-tetraphosphate ester (II), cyclotetraphosphate ester (III), isocyclotetraphosphate ester (IV), and tetraphosphate ester (V). Phosphorus n.m.r. measurements show the content of the mixtures. The so-called 'ethyl metaphosphate' (Langheld ester) is a mixture of III (50% to 45%), IV (36% to 25%), and V (14% to 30%).
