Aperture studies for the Fermilab AP2 anti-proton line

Description: The AP2 beamline transports anti-protons from the production target to the Debuncher ring. The observed aperture is smaller than that estimated from linear, on-energy optics. We have investigated possible reasons for the aperture limitation and have identified possible sources, including residual vertical dispersion from alignment errors and chromatic effects due to very large chromatic lattice functions. Some experiments have already been performed to study these effects. We present results of … more

Beam-based determination of the offset of Booster {gamma}{sub T} quads

Description: Twelve pulsed {gamma}{sub T} quads have been installed in the Booster to provide fast transition crossing. The less time the beam stays in the non-adiabatic period near transition, the less the longitudinal emittance grows. From the past experience, the {gamma}{sub T} quads are not well aligned relative to the usual closed orbit. Quad steering can cause beam loss and a dispersion wave after transition. To make the {gamma}{sub T} quads routinely operational, procedures for finding the center of … more

Experimental Studies of Electrons in a Heavy-Ion Beam

Description: Electron cloud effects, ECEs, are normally a problem only in ring accelerators. However, heavy-ion induction linacs for inertial fusion energy have an economic incentive to fit beam tubes tightly to intense beams. This places them at risk from electron clouds produced by emission of electrons and gas from walls. We have measured electron and gas emission from 1 MeV K{sup +} impact on surfaces near grazing incidence on the High-Current Experiment (HCX) at LBNL. Electron emission coefficients rea… more

KE Basin Sludge Flocculant Testing

Description: In the revised path forward and schedule for the K Basins Sludge Retrieval and Disposal Project, the sludge in K East (KE) Basin will be moved from the floor and pits and transferred to large, free-standing containers located in the pits (so as to isolate the sludge from the basin). When the sludge is pumped into the containers, it must settle fast enough and clarify sufficiently that the overflow water returned to the basin pool will not cloud the water or significantly increase the radiologic… more

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Measurements of Plutonium-bearing Oxide in DOE-STD-3013-2000 Containers Using Calorimetry and Gamma Isotopic Analyses

Description: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) routinely uses calorimetry and gamma isotopic analyses (Cal/Iso) for the accountability measurement of plutonium (Pu) bearing items. In the past 15 years, the vast majority of those items measured by Cal/Iso were contained in a thin-walled convenience can enclosed in another thin-walled outer container. However, LLNL has recently begun to use DOE-STD-3013-2000 containers as well. These DOE-STD-3013-2000 containers are comprised of a stainless steel … more

Nonabelian Monopoles

Description: We study topological as well as dynamical properties of BPS nonabelian magnetic monopoles of Goddard-Nuyts-Olive-Weinberg type in $ G=SU(N)$, $USp(2N)$ and SO(N) gauge theories, spontaneously broken to nonabelian subgroups $H$. We find that monopoles transform under the group dual to $H$ in a tensor representation of rank determined by the corresponding element in $\pi_1(H)$. When the system is embedded in a $\cal N=2$ supersymmetric theory with an appropriate set of flavors with appropriate ba… more

OPERATION OF SECOND-GENERATION HCX DIAGNOSTICS FOR ELECTRON AND GAS EFFECTS IN MAGNETIC QUADRUPOLE MAGNETS

Description: We report the successful development and commissioning of new diagnostics for electron cloud and gas desorption studies on the High Current Experiment (HCX) at LBNL. These measure the time-dependent gas density in a 0.03 - 0.2 A 1 MeV K{sup +} ion beam inside of a quadrupole magnet, and the three possible sources of electrons: from ionization of gas, from beam tube walls, and from an end wall where the beam dumps. The accumulation of electrons in the beam is determined by measuring the net char… more

Plasmas with index of refraction greater than one

Description: Over the last decade, X-ray lasers in the wavelength range14 - 47 nm have been used to do interferometry of plasmas. Just as for optical interferometry of plasmas, the experimental analysis assumed that the index of refraction is due only to the free electrons. This makes the index of refraction less then one. Recent experiments in Al plasmas have observed fringe lines bend the wrong way as though the electron density is negative. We show how the bound electrons can dominate the index of refrac… more
