Temperature tests of high frequency SLIFER oscillator, LEA73-2176. [For monitoring underground nuclear detonations at Nevada Test Site]

Description: SLIFER (Short Location Indication by Frequency of Electrical Resonance) systems measure stress wave velocity in solid or liquid materials. They monitor underground nuclear detonations at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). A shorted length of coaxial cable is a component in an oscillator's tank circuit. This sensor cable is inductive when less than one-fourth wavelength long at the oscillator's resonant frequency. The stress wave from a detonation crushes and shorts this sensor cable. As the … more

The H II Region of a Primordial Star

Description: The concordance model of cosmology and structure formation predicts the formation of isolated very massive stars at high redshifts in dark matter dominated halos of 10{sup 5} to 10{sup 6} Msun. These stars photo-ionize their host primordial molecular clouds, expelling all the baryons from their halos. When the stars die, a relic H II region is formed within which large amounts of molecular hydrogen form which will allow the gas to cool efficiently when gravity assembles it into larger dark matt… more

Fuel-flexible partial oxidation reforming of hydrocarbons for automotive applications.

Description: Micro-reactor tests indicate that our partial oxidation catalyst is fuel-flexible and can reform conventional (gasoline and diesel) and alternative (ethanol, methanol, natural gas) fuels to hydrogen rich product gases with high hydrogen selectivity. Alcohols are reformed at lower temperatures (< 600 C) while alkanes and unsaturated hydrocarbons require slightly higher temperatures. Cyclic hydrocarbons and aromatics have also been reformed at relatively low temperatures, however, a different … more

Molecular dynamic simulations of the lithium coordination environment in phosphate glasses

Description: A molecular dynamics (MD) study of the lithium ultraphosphate glass series, xLi{sub 2}O{center_dot}(1{minus}x)P{sub 2}O{sub 5} (0 {le} x < 0.5) was used to investigate the changes in the Li environment with increasing modifier concentration. The results from the MD simulations indicate that no major structural variations in the Li coordination environment are observed. Changes in the type of oxygen coordinated to the modifier are observed and correlate with the T{sub g} minimum. Additionally… more

Experimental attempt to achieve microstructure variations through temperature/time permutations for a nonwrought powder metallurgy uranium-6 niobium alloy

Description: The powder metallurgical processing of uranium-6 niobium (U-6Nb) alloy has undergone 3 years of characterization at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. The current structure of the powder metallurgy (P/M) alloy has been described as duplex: a mixture of two or more distinct grain sizes. An experiment was conducted to determine a gamma stabilizing heat treatment (time and temperature combination) to produce a structure consisting of one gamma grain size. Two heat treatments were found to produce an irregu… more

IMAP: A complete Ion Micro-Analysis Package for the nuclear microprobe

Description: Microprobe techniques using scanned, focused MeV ions are routinely used in Livermore for materials characterization. Comprehensive data analysis with these techniques is accomplished with the computer software package IMAP, for Ion Micro-Analysis Package. IMAP consists of a set of command language procedures for data processing and quantitative spectral analysis. Deconvolution of the data is achieved by spawning sub-processes within IMAP which execute analysis codes for each specific microprob… more

Probing Ferroelectricity in PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 with Polarized Soft X-rays

Description: The reduction in symmetry associated with the onset of ferroelectric order in PbZr{sub 0.2}Ti{sub 0.8}O{sub 3} (PZT) thin films leads to a pronounced difference at the Ti L{sub 3,2} absorption edges between spectra measured with the x-ray linear polarization perpendicular and parallel to the ferroelectric polarization. We introduce a general method to analyze the observed difference spectra using atomic multiplet calculations. Moreover, we find experimental evidence for structural changes in PZ… more

MATERIAL TRACKING USING LANMAS

Description: LANMAS is a transaction-based nuclear material accountability software product developed to replace outdated and legacy accountability systems throughout the DOE. The core underlying purpose of LANMAS is to track nuclear materials inventory and report transactions (movement, mixing, splitting, decay, etc.) to the Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS). While LANMAS performs those functions well, there are many additional functions provided by the software product. As a mater… more

Search for the Decay tau- to 4pi- 3pi+ (pi0) nu_tau

Description: A search for the decay of the {tau} lepton to seven charged pions and one or zero {pi}{sup 0} mesons was performed using the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider. The analysis uses 232.2 fb{sup -1} of data at center-of-mass energies on or near the {Upsilon}(4S) resonance. We observe 24 events with an expected background of 21.6 {+-} 1.3 events. Without evidence for a signal, we calculate an upper limit of {Beta}({tau}{sup -} {yields} 4{pi}{sup -}3{pi}{sup +})… more

Bioremediation of Petroleum and Radiological Contaminated Soils at the Savannah River Site: Laboratory to Field Scale Applications

Description: In the process of Savannah River Site (SRS) operations limited amounts of waste are generated containing petroleum, and radiological contaminated soils. Currently, this combination of radiological and petroleum contaminated waste does not have an immediate disposal route and is being stored in low activity vaults. SRS developed and implemented a successful plan for clean up of the petroleum portion of the soils in situ using simple, inexpensive, bioreactor technology. Treatment in a bioreactor … more

Flight Investigation at High Speeds of the Drag of Three Airfoils and a Circular Cylinder Representing Full-Scale Propeller Shanks

Description: "Tests have been made at high speeds to determine the drag of models, simulating propeller shanks, in the form of a circular cylinder and three airfoils, the NACA 16-025, the NACA 16-040, and the NACA 16-040 with the rear 25 percent chord cut off. All the models had a maximum thickness of 4 1/2 inches to conform with average propeller-shank dimensions and a span of 20 1/4 inches. For the tests the models were supported perpendicular to the lower surface of the wing of an XP-51 airplane (p. 277). more

Determination of Longitudinal Phase Space in SLAC Main Accelerator Beams

Description: In the E164 Experiment at that Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), we drive plasma wakes for electron acceleration using 28.5 GeV bunches from the main accelerator. These bunches can now be made with an RMS length of 12 microns, and accurate direct measurement of their lengths is not feasible shot by shot. Instead, we use an indirect technique, measuring the energy spectrum at the end of the linac and comparing with detailed simulations of the entire machine. We simulate with LiTrack, a … more

Recent Data on Tire Friction During Landing

Description: "An investigation was made at the Langley landing-loads track to obtain data on the coefficient of friction during wheel spin-up. A landing gear was tested at horizontal velocities ranging from 0 to 180 feet per second together with vertical velocities of 7.0 and 9.3 feet per second. The results indicate the effect of forward speed and tire inflation pressure on the coefficient of friction" (p. 1).

Evaluation of macroreticular anion exchange resin - RTA-893-R

Description: The macroreticular anion exchange resin, Amberlite IRA-900-OH, and an experimental resin from Ionac Chemical Company were irradiated by a /sup 60/Co source to doses of 5 x 10/sup 7/ rad and 10/sup 8/ rad. These doses approximate or exceed the dose encountered by the deionizer resins in 100-Area service. The loss in exchange capacity and the volume changes of Amberlite IRA-900 on irradiation were similar to those found previously for Amberlite IRA-400. The Ionac experimental resin, which had a c… more
