Status and Future Program of Homogeneous Reactor Fuel Processing Studies

Description: The behavior of insoluble corrosion products in the HRT is generally understood and studies of the removal of these solids by hydroclones can logically be terminated after the effect of higher processing rates by the multiple hydroclone has been determined. Chemical descaling may be required to supplement solids removal by hydroclones. Laboratory studies to find suitable reagents will be continued in conjunction with decontamination work presently in progress.

Steam Water Pressure Drop and Critical Discharge Flow - A Digital Computer Program

Description: It is the purpose of this report to explain the bands and uses of a digital computer program for the calculation of steady state steam-water pressure drop and critical flow in pipes. The program has been coded for the IBM 709 computer. While so attempt has been made to obtain improved models of two-phase flow, it is believed that the numerical integration technique used in the code will permit more accurate calculation where pressure drops are large compared to the upstream pressure. The techni… more

Program on the IBM 709 Digital Computer of the P3 Approximation to the Boltzmann Transports equation in Cylindrical Geometry

Description: In formulating this general diffusion theory expression which represents the neutron balance in a nuclear chain reactor the following assumptions were made : (1) the medium through which the neutrons are diffusing has a low neutron capture cross section, (2) the region in which the flux distribute is being described is two or three mean free paths from strong sources and sinks or from a boundary. Certainly, is going to the lattice cell of a receptor, both of the above conditions are violated; f… more

Effects of Total Body Z Irradiation of Rats. Part I, Lethal Action of Single, Paired, and Periodic Doses

Description: Abstract: Exposure of Sprague Dawley white rats to single doses of 900 kvp X radiation demonstrated a medium lethal dose of 600 r which was not markedly dependent upon sex, weight, or, in the case of females, stage of the estrous cycle at the time of irradiation. Deaths within 30 days were most frequent between the fourth and eighth, and between the tenth and fifteenth post- irradiation days, indicating the existence of at least two processes leading to death in the "acute" period.

Reactions of the Hydrated Electron

Description: Abstract. The rate constants for the reaction of the hydrated electron eaq with a number of solutes and with radicals formed in water radiolysis are reported. Hydrated electrons were formed in the electron pulse irradiated solutions at concentrations in the range from 1 to 10 pM. Their reaction was followed by the decay of the optical absorption of eaq at 5780 A. Generally a 04 psec pulse of 15 MeV electrons was used. In the absence of eaq scavengers, second-order kinetics prevailed owing to th… more

User's guide to program PF for permanent file archiving and retrieval. [CNDENSE purges specified tape files and consolidates those remaining, for CDC 7600 computer]

Description: Program PF provides a method for a 7600 user to copy his disk files to magnetic tape(s). When at a later time the user wishes to attach a disk file which has been purged, program PF will retrieve the file from an archive tape and catalog it on disk. A disk file called ARCHIVEDIRECTORY, which contains information about each file, is maintained by PF. The program CNDENSE, which purges specified files from user archive tapes and consolidates the remaining ones, is also briefly described. (RWR)

Robust Wiener filtering for Adaptive Optics

Description: In many applications of optical systems, the observed field in the pupil plane has a non-uniform phase component. This deviation of the phase of the field from uniform is called a phase aberration. In imaging systems this aberration will degrade the quality of the images. In the case of a large astronomical telescope, random fluctuations in the atmosphere lead to significant distortion. These time-varying distortions can be corrected using an Adaptive Optics (AO) system, which is a real-time co… more

Fast modal wave-front reconstruction

Description: In this project I apply the concepts and techniques learned in Applied Computational Harmonic Analysis (ACHA) to my research. I am currently developing fast wave-front reconstruction techniques for high-order Adaptive Optics systems. The fast reconstruction technique which we plan on using is based on the DFT. Reconstruction and optional filtering occur in the frequency domain. This is a significantly different approach than current methods of wave-front reconstruction, which use a matrix multi… more

UNH transfer study

Description: The transfer of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate solution from the, Purex Plant in 200-East Area to the U0{sub 3} Plant in 200-West Area is presently being accomplished with the use of two specially built trailer trucks. This system has been used since the startup of the Purex Plant. Because the production rate of Purex has increased significantly since then, it seems appropriate to ask, ``Is trucking the optimum method under the present and predicted rates of production?`` At the request of Purex Op… more

On solutions of Sacherer integral equation

Description: There are basically two approaches in solving the Sacherer integral equation, one uses the orthogonal polynomial expansion for radial functions, and another uses the Hankel harmonic samplings, both have extensive application. In this article, we discuss these approaches and present the corresponding solutions. If the azimuthal modes are not coupled, the Sacherer integral equation can be treated as an eigenvalue problem. It is shown that the information provided by the eigenvalue alone are insuf… more
