Research and Development Studies on Waste Storage Process

Description: The basic objectives of this program were the determination of the thermal stability of various fission product oxides and nitrates, and an investigation of the gas phase decomposition of ruthenium tetroxide. To accomplish these objectives, a literature survey was flrst made of available physical and chemical data for the oxides and nitrates of Cs, Sr, Ru, Zr, Nb, and Ce. The data were supplemented by a calculation of thermodynamic functions for RuO/sub 4/ vapor from the experimentally determin… more

Magnetic Properties of Insulators : Quarterly Report No. 1 Covering the Period from February 15, 1961 to May 15, 1961

Description: "The magnetic properties of color centers were studied to obtain information regarding electron traps in insulators. Experiments designed to determine the equation governing the recovery of resonance after saturation were carried out. Relatively large samples were prepared by the method of additive coloration. KCl and RbCl crystals were used. Resonance saturation as a function of concentration was investigated and no significant dependence found. Measurements of the unsaturated susceptibility w… more

Flow Properties of Superfluid Systems of Fermions

Description: The nonspherically symmetric solutions to the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory are given a physical interpretation in terms of an anisotropic fluid model. These solutions have been used previously to predict a phase transition in liquid by He{sup 3} by Emery and Sessler and Anderson, Morel, Brueckner, and Soda. An investigation of the flow properties of such systems is made that involves the calculation of the effective mass for flow in a straight channel and the moment of inertia of a cylindri… more

Monthly report of activities: MAY 1, 1969

Description: Some of the activities this month are: (1) The AEC authorization bill was passed by the House of Representatives on April 4 and by the Senate on April 8. It has been signed by the President. The 200 BeV accelerator is authorized for construction in fiscal year 1969, with a total authorization of $32.333 million. The appropriation bill is in the House at the time of this report. (2) A tentative decision has been made to incorporate an injection storage ring into the accelerator design. This ring… more

ELECTRON-SPIN-RESONANCE STUDIES ON PHOTO-SYNTHETIC MATERIALS

Description: A number of organisms have been examined for their ability to produce electron-spin-resonance signals at low temperatures in response to illumination. The efficiency of the response is of the order of not less than 5%, and the wavelength for maximum response is generally slightly on the longer side of the wavelength of maximum absorption, with a minimum appearing at the wavelength of maximum absorption.

ANGULAR DISTRIBUTION OF FRAGMENTS FROM FISSION INDUCED BY HEAVYIONS IN GOLD AND BISMUTH

Description: We present the results of measurements of the angular distribution of fission fragments produced by irradiation of Au{sup 197} and Bi{sup 209} with various heavy ions. The projectiles, B{sup 11}, C{sup 12}, N{sup 14}, and O{sup 16}, had energies from a few MeV above the Coulomb barrier to 10.4 MeV per nucleon. The gross features of these results can be explained by use of a model and parameters that have been used by others to account for angular distributions of fission fragments from helium-i… more

A Needle in a Haystack

Description: Abstract: "Production of [rho]'s and [omega]'s in [pi]- + p and p + [letter p with a bar over it] interactions is discussed. The [rho] is presumably a J = 1-, 1 = 1 state and thus can decay into 2[pi]'s via a strong coupling. The [omega] is probably J = 1-, 1 = 0 which can also decay into 2[pi]'s via electromagnetic coupling. A theoretical description of this situation is presented in terms of coupled time-dependent Schroedinger equations which mix [rho] and [omega] states that are assumed to b… more

Hazard Analysis for Cesium Shipments

Description: The rail shipment of large quantities of radiocesium involves a potential accidental release of this material in a readily available form to the biosphere. The magnitude of the associated potential damage to man and his environment is evaluated in this report. The evaluation of the consequences of an accidental release of Cs-137 from the Shielded Transfer Tank, Model II (STT) assumes loss of Cs-137 to the atmosphere or to surface-water. Release to the atmosphere could result from a collision fo… more
