Production of (Uranium) Tetrafluoride

Description: Production of tetrafluoride for the month of April was 49,400. New equipment installed late in March operated smoothly and the production was slightly over the rated capacity of the plant. Nickel ends were welded on to the steel reactor tubes to prevent corrosion at the cover joint and possible contamination of the product with iron. Hanford Engineer Works technical manual

Description: The uranium metal, as discharged from the piles in the 100 Areas, contains the alpha emitting product, plutonium, in concentration in the neighborhood of 150--250 grams per metric ton, along with similar amounts of beta and gamma fission elements. Interim report No. 2 on Production Test No. 105-17-P, Laboratory evaluation of proposed lubricants

Description: The lubricant (Calel A-60) used to reduce pushing forces when discharging slugs from pile tubes forms a cloudy emulsion with water. During the initial period of operation at 100 B and D areas, spillage of lubricant during discharge produced so much cloudiness in the basin water that it interfered with sorting operations. Turbidity coagulant for Columbia River water

Description: In this document, information about the need for a better compound to for filtering process water from the production reactors. It was found that the natural turbidity in the Columbia River was high enough to necessitate the use of a coagulant to minimize the passage of iron through filters. Tests indicated that Ferrisul was the better of the two compounds tested.

100-F area unit purge, May 3, 1945

Description: This report discusses the pressure drop on the 100-F unit, as measured on the eight pressure drop tubes, which had increased to 24 lbs./in.{sup 2} above base by May 2. The unit was shut down on May 3 to purge with 50 ppm solids for 1.1 hr. and to take care of necessary maintenance work.

Corrosion of Tuballoy-Molybdenum Alloys by Water

Description: The primary purpose of the corrosion work was to find a tuballoy alloy which would be sufficiently corrosion resistant to be useful for canned slugs even if some of the can were to leak. The secondary purpose was to obtain general corrosion data on tuballoy alloys.
