Radiologic Hazards Predicted for a Given Height Burst of an Atomic Bomb

Description: Abstract: An appraisal is made of the radiologic hazard created by a 1000-ft. high air burst of a nominal sized nuclear bomb. Three sets of graphs are included which show the relations between dose rate (milliroentgens per hour), time post-shot, and distance from Ground Zero for a soil having given constituents. Estimates are given for fall-out activity (gamma) for distances up to about 200 miles from Ground Zero immediately after fall-out. It is pointed out that the radiologic hazard due to fall-out in the example cited is insignificant; further, that the radiologic hazard from similar nuclear bombs bursting at different heights above the ground will vary to a considerable extent.

Determination of Free Nitric Acid in UNH Solutions, Problem Assignment No. 208-X2A, Progress Report

Description: Technical report abstract: Since UNH is a highly dissociated compound which ionizes to NO3 and (UO2), the latter ion being very weakly basic, a solution of pure UNH is quite acid (pH about 3). It is possible to titrate to a phenolphthalein and point with standard caustic solution and obtain a figure which represents the free acid plus the NO3 from the the UNH. However, titration of the free nitric acid alone in such a solution presents quite a problem. By precipitating and removing uranium from solution by means of potassium ferrocyanide, the residual free acid may be titrated directly by means of standard caustic using either methyl red or phenolphthalein indicators, with an error of less than 4%. A method is given to determine formic acid, should that acid be present in the mixture.

Survey of Processing Methods for the Production of Thorium Metal from Monazite Sand and Thorium Nitrate

Description: Cost estimates for two types of Th producing plants are offered. One utilizes Th(NO3)4 as raw material, the other uses monazite sand. Final processing schemes and plant designs are not fixed, so the estimates represent maximum costs. Recommendations for research and development of Th producing methods are given.
