Meson Production By High-Energy Neutrons

Description: The angular distribution of charged x mesons produced by 300 <x> 30 Mev neutrons on C12 and Be9 have been studied. An analysis of the kinematics for meson production in a nucleon-nucleon collision indicates a fairly well defined center-of-mass system.

Absolute Cross Sections of the Reaction P + P - w+ + d

Description: Absolute differential cross sections for the reaction p + p - w+ + d were obtained by detecting meson-deuteron coincidences produced by passing the 340-Mev external proton beam of the Berkeley synchro-cyclotron through a liquid hydrogen target.

Survey of Processing Methods for the Production of Thorium Metal from Monazite Sand and Thorium Nitrate

Description: Cost estimates for two types of Th producing plants are offered. One utilizes Th(NO3)4 as raw material, the other uses monazite sand. Final processing schemes and plant designs are not fixed, so the estimates represent maximum costs. Recommendations for research and development of Th producing methods are given.

Material Replacement Experiments ; Theory and Measurements for the Lady Godiva Assembly

Description: The perturbation theory for material replacement experiments is given through second order thus permitting corrections for sample size. Computed flux and adjoint distribution functions are tabulated for the Lady Godiva assembly enabling the observed danger coefficients for U-238 and U-235 to be compared with corresponding predicted values. Consistency of this data is checked by its use in three independent combinations each yielding for the effective fraction of delayed neutrons from fast fissi… more

Corrosion of Stainless Steels in Purex Acid Concentrators

Description: The corrosion resistance of four types of austenitic stainless steels to Purex process first and second acid concentrator bottoms was determined. Although the compositions of the two solutions were very similar, tests in simulated solutions of both compositions were conducted to strengthen the basis for the conclusions which were to be made.

The Solvent Extraction of Thorium by Thenoyltrifluoroacetone and the Influence of Aqueous Complexation by the Chelating Agent

Description: Technical report investigating the solvent extraction of thorium. The solvent extraction of thorium by the chelating agent, thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA), has proved to be a very effective tool for studying the complex ion chemistry of thorium. This study led to the establishment of the existence of aqueous complexation by the chelating agent.

The Brookhaven Chemonuclear in-Pile Test Loop

Description: Technical report outlining the plan to develop the Brookhaven chemonuclear in-pile test loop because the interest in utilizing reactor radiation energy (fission-fragment recoil and neutron-gamma) for production of chemicals has developed to the point where a loop to study chemonuclear system in a reactor under dynamic conditions is necessary.

Modification of a hardwired numerical control to include switchable Inch/Metric capability. [Digital logic of Hughes N/C Model 2000 Control on EE Monarch lathe]

Description: A unique and relatively simple method is described for modifying a 1965-vintage hardwired numerical control (N/C) for a machine tool so that it can operate in the SI (Metric) as well as the Inch mode. The modification procedure will be valuable during the transition from Inch to SI measurements, as it allows a numerically-controlled machine tool originally designed to operate only in the Inch mode to be ''recycled'' for SI use. The system digital logic of a Hughes N/C Model … more

Anion exchange flow sheets and equipment for recovery of Task I filtrates

Description: The filtrate stream from the precipitation--filtration step of the Button Line process must be recycled to recovery operations to reclaim residual plutonium. Present practice is to transfer the filtrates to Recuplex, concentrate by a factor of 6 to 10, and blend into the feed stream for solvent extraction purification. Limited tankage is available for solution storage. Interruption of Recuplex operations necessitates termination of operations in the precipitation-filtration steps and other Butt… more

Economics of geothermal electricity generation from hydrothermal resources

Description: The most important factors affecting the economics of geothermal electricity production are the wellhead temperature or enthalpy, the well flow rate, and the cost of the wells. The capital cost of the powerplant is significant, but not highly sensitive to these resource characteristics. The optimum geothermal plant size will remain small, usually in the 50-100 MWe range. Therefore, the opportunities for achieving significant cost reductions through ''economies of scale'' are small. The steam an… more

Effect of a bridge balance network on a semiconductor pressure transducer

Description: Pressure transducers and accelerometers that make use of semiconductors strain gages or have strain gages diffused on a silicon diaphragm cannot be used with a bridge balance network if one wants to achieve thermal zero compensation. Thermal zero compensation is compensating for the change in output due to temperature only, and is typically +-1.5 percent of the full scale output for a temperature change of 100/sup 0/F. The reason for not using a balance network is the way in which the transduce… more

SEA - A Simplified Employee Assessment

Description: This paper presents a proposal for modifying the current employee annual evaluation process in SCAD. It purports to simplify that process, primarily by breaking up the resultant document into a set of more or less independent components. It claims to reduce the overall time and effort required from each actor.
