Acquired immunologic tolerance in chimeras and histocompatibility factors in cattle and their relationship to those in humans. Final report. [Gamma radiation]

Description: During the course of this project we have studied 35 pairs of chimeric cattle twins. It is now clear that fractionated doses of whole-body /sup 60/Co irradiation can cause marked shifts in the proportions of the two erythrocyte populations that make up the chimeric mixture. However, it has not been possible to eliminate one of the two cell types and thus abrogate the acquired immunologic tolerance. The results of our extensive skin-grafting experiments are remarkable because they show that a ch… more

Air change measurements using a tracer gas technique

Description: The air change rate in a single story office building was measured using a tracer gas technique. The air change rate was determined by the rate of decay method using sulfur hexafluoride as the tracer gas. A total of eight tests were conducted within a forty-eight hour period under small temperature differences and wind velocities. Two different building conditions were investigated: (1) supply ventilation fan on, producing a positive pressure in the building, and (2) supply ventilation fan off.… more

Approach to ferromagnetism in amorphous Ni--P--B alloys

Description: Magnetization was measured between 1.7 and 300/sup 0/K in fields up to 70 kOe on splat-cooled Ni--P--B amorphous alloys in the critical concentration range for the appearance of ferromagnetism. The onset of ferromagnetism is attributed to interactions between giant moments. For the composition range investigated, the magnetic contribution is arising mainly from moments of 5 to 6 ..mu../sub B/ with a Kondo-type characteristic temperature of 1/sup 0/K.

Assessment of primary piping integrity and leak development characteristics for the Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant

Description: An interim assessment is presented of factors affecting primary piping integrity and leak development characteristics in the CRBRP in relation to the leak-before-break concept. Factors considered are the mechanical aspects of crack initiation and growth, sodium corrosion and mass transport, caustic corrosion, and fabrication and inspection/surveillance techniques. An assessment of these factors leads to the following conclusions: while the leak-before-break concept appears to have validity, the… more

Automated array assembly. Quarterly report No. 1, February--March 1976

Description: We have begun our study for the Automated Array Assembly Task by simultaneously evaluating present manufacturing techniques using expenses based on experience and studying basic cost factors for each step to evaluate expenses from a first-principles point of view. We are developing a formal cost accounting procedure which will be used throughout the study for cost comparisons. The first test of this procedure is a comparison of its predicted costs for array module manufacturing with costs from … more

AXMIX program for cross section mixing and library arrangement. [In FORTRAN IV for IBM 360 computers]

Description: AXMIX is a FORTRAN IV computer code written to provide the user a tool for creating cross-section data sets for ANISN and DOT from cross-section sets already available on cards, nuclide-organized libraries, and group-independent data sets. Numerous options, including adjointing, P/sub n/ adjustments, and changing table length, are available to give the user broad flexibility. The number of energy groups which will fit into the core allocated is determined first. If all groups will fit, the solu… more

Bremsstrahlung convertors: materials design and development

Description: An improved bremsstrahlung convertor for use at high electron beam energies was developed. The convertor consists of three main components: (1) conversion foil; (2) electron scavenger; and (3) impulse shield. Structural failures of the impulse shield were experimentally determined to be caused by shock wave interactions. Convertor materials and design modifications were aimed at attenuation of the magnitude of the shock and maximization of energy absorption by the convertor materials. Technique… more

CACHE: an extended BASIC program which computes the performance of shell and tube heat exchangers. [HTGR]

Description: An extended BASIC program, CACHE, has been written to calculate steady state heat exchange rates in the core auxiliary heat exchangers, (CAHE), designed to remove afterheat from High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors (HTGR). Computationally, these are unbaffled counterflow shell and tube heat exchangers. The computational method is straightforward. The exchanger is subdivided into a user-selected number of lengthwise segments; heat exchange in each segment is calculated in sequence and summed. Th… more

Calculation of multicomponent flows in the aerodynamic separation of uranium isotopes

Description: Equations governing gas flow containing uranium hexafluoride and an inert carrier have been developed for mixtures typical of those used in aerodynamic isotope separation. In this report these equations are solved for a simple separation device (two-dimensional channel with external force). The numerical solutions are compared with the results obtained from direct simulation.

Calculation of radiation damage effects of 800-MeV protons in a ''thin'' copper target

Description: Radiation damage effects of 800-MeV protons incident on a l-cm-thick copper target were calculated by using the nucleon-meson transport code to determine the nuclear reactions produced by the protons, and the theory of Lindhard et al. to evaluate the resultant damage energy deposited in the target. Damage effects were found to be uniform across the 1-cm target thickness, and the results obtained can be expressed in cross-section form applicable to target thicknesses from about 0.01 cm to 2 cm. … more

CAPABILTY FOR PROCESSING POWER REACTOR FUELS

Description: The reprocessing of commercial power reactor fuels in existing or modified facilities has been examined for four different reprocessing rates. Existing capabilities in the 325A hot cells will permit processing up to 2 kg of fuel per day using an 8-stage centrifugal contactor and discarding the uranium-plutonium stream in the organic phase. The principal problems with this system are feed clarification, equipment reliability, and waste disposal. The cost is anticipated to be about $30,000 per ru… more

Ceramic research on transformational superplasticity and stoichiometry effects on fracture. Research progress report, June 1, 1975--May 31, 1976

Description: The progress of the program is reviewed by treating each of the areas separately. In the superplasticity investigation, the results of the Bi/sub 2/WO/sub 6/ and Bi/sub 2/MoO/sub 3/ systems are discussed both in terms of the transformational deformation and also the thermal cycling growth phenomenon. The growth phenomenon on thermal cycling through the phase transition shows some interesting bulk and microstructural features in terms of specimen strain and highly anisotropic grain growth. Coalescence instability of magnetic islands

Description: The stability of a periodic magnetic island structure was studied using the ideal MHD equations. An instability is found which describes the tendency toward coalescence of parallel currents in the neighboring islands. It is expected that this instability will proceed at a fast MHD rate as long as the forces driving the instability can overcome the stabilizing forces due to the compression of the magnetic field between the islands. Beyond that phase, resistivity is expected to dominate the tende… more

Collisional plasma model: a velocity-space orthogonal-function representation for the distribution function of a collisional plasma

Description: A velocity-space orthogonal-function representation has been developed for the distribution function of a collisional plasma. The choice of functions is determined by several criteria: (1) the functions must provide an accurate representation of the Coulomb collision operator; (2) the representation must be efficient in that physical plasmas be represented by as few terms as possible in order to minimize both computer time and storage requirements; and (3) the collision and Vlasov operators mus… more
