Accidental Dispersion of Reactor Poisons and the Controlled Distance Required

Description: Two types of hypothetical reactor catastrophe are considered. In the first of these, the Boiling Accident,'' it is assumed that a fraction of the radioactive material in a reactor is released to the atmosphere at a steady rate over a period of hours. In the second, the Puff Accident,'' it is assumed that the release of the radioactive material takes place instantaneously.'' The following concepts are used as measures of the hazard existing outside the controlled plant area. Danger Distance,'' d… more

The Agglomeration of Solid Aerosol Particles. Technical Report No. 16

Description: The variations of size and density of aerosol particles were examined. Experiments were made with a wide variety of substances using a modification of Whytlaw-Gray and Patterson's methods in which freefall velocity was determined. The mass was estimated both by balancing the gravitational and electrostatic forces and from rising velocities under constant field strength. The results were compared with the shape and structure of the aerosols shown by electron microscopy. The variation of the Stok… more

Analysis of spanwise temperature distribution in three types of air-cooled turbine blade

Description: From Summary: An approximate method for determining the allowable stress-limited blade-temperature distribution is included, with brief accounts of a method for determining the maximum allowable effective gas temperatures and the cooling-air requirements. Numerical examples that illustrate the use of the various temperature-distribution equations and of the nondimensional charts are also included.

Borax-IV Reactor: Manufacture of Fuel and Blanket Elements

Description: The procedures used in fabricating the core loading for the natural water-cooled Borax-IV reactor are described. Manufacturing of the fuel plates and blanket plates, which contain fissile (U/sup 235/) and/or fertile (Th/sup 232/) material in ceramic form, lead-bonded within tubes in aluminum-1 wi.% nickel extrusions, is described in deteil. A brief description of the assembly and welding of the finished plates into subassemblies and assemblies is given. Preparation of the ceramic bodies was des… more

Characteristics of loads in rough air at transonic speeds of rocket-powered models of a canard and a conventional-tail configuration

Description: Report presenting results from flight tests at transonic speeds for a canard and a conventional-tail rocket-powered model in continuous rough air. The use of an airspeed-fluctuation instrument for measuring the turbulence intensity experienced is described as well as the resulting improvement in the technique of testing rocket models in rough air. The short-period frequency was dominant in the center-of-gravity normal-acceleration response for both models.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT FOR OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 1958

Description: Fluoride Volatilization Separations Process. Work has continued on the development of fluoride volatilization processes for recovery of U and Pu from spent power-reactor fuels. Results are reported on the fluorination rates of U and Pu oxides and fluorides. The conversion rate of UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ to UF/sub 6/ by elemental fluorine was determined as a function of temperature. Uranium trioxide is fiuorinated at a slower rate than the other U compounds investigated. On exposure to fluorine PuO/su… more

Chemical Stability of Purex and Uranium Recovery Process Solvent

Description: The desirability of operating the Purex columns at higher temperatures, 50 to 70 deg C, made it necessary to obtain data on the stabiliyy of solverts at these higher temperatures. Since the present diluent will not be entirely safe at the upper temperature limit, a number of diluents with higher flash points were investigated. (J. E. D.)

The Chemistry of 1,2-Dithiolane (Trimethylene Disulfide) As aModel for the Primary Quantum Conversion Act in Photosynthesis

Description: Some chemical and photochemical observations of 1,2-dithiolane and its derivatives are reported with particular reference to the possible mode of function of the naturally occurring system, 6-thioctic acid. Experimental evidence is presented to demonstrate that the strain energy in this 5-membered ring is not less than 6.5 Kcals and probably larger. Reagents which both oxidize and reduce this ring are described together with the conditions required for its reformation from the corresponding dit… more
