Derivation of Linearized, Difference-Differential Equations for Analog Computer Studies of Gas-Flow Oscillations

Description: The basic heat transfer and flow equations applicable to studies of flow oscillations in NERVA engines are first linearized, then expressed as difference-differential approximations, and finally written in a form suitable for analog computer solution. Block diagrams are presented which illustrate on analog procedure for solving the linearized, difference-differential equations.

Critical Studies of Core B for the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant (ZPR-III Assembly No. 35)

Description: Critical studies of a simplified mockup of the second loading (Core B) for the Enrico Fermi fast reactor were made. The core consists of a fully enriched, UO/sub 2/-stainless steel cermet clad in stainless steel and cooled by sodium. The high critical mass found for the reactor mockup led to a series of experiments on reducing neutron leakage from the core by surrounding it with different reflectors. With a nickel reflector in place, measurements were made of the reactivity worths of various en… more

Nucleon-Meson Cascade Calculations: Shielding Against an 800-Mev Proton Beam

Description: Nucleon-meson cascade calculations were carried out and the dose as a function of depth was obtained for an 800-Mev proton beam incident on a shield. The physical properties used for the shielding medium are only a rough approximation to the properties of any particular medium. Muon, neutron, pion, and proton dose rates and fluxes are listed. A Study of Copper Oxidation and Some Irradiation Effects. Final Report

Description: A new volumetric apparatus and a procedure for the study of the kinetics of oxidation of metals in a nuclear reactor are described. Measurements were made on the initial stages of oxidation of 99.999% pure, polycrystalline Cu wires at 100 to 300 c- C. The O gas was held at constant pressures during each isothermal oxidation. The pressures employed ranged from 50 to 200 mm Hg. A significant increase in logarithmic oxidation rate was observed in the presence of 2 x 10/sup 6/ r/hr of gamma irradia… more

Performance of Cesium Thermionic Diodes Operated in Series-Parallel Circuits

Description: S>Electrical power degradation from the operation of many series- parallel circuited cesium diodes in a thermionic reactor must be considered when a norflattened nuclear power distribution exists over the volume of the reactor core. This experimert measures the loss of power and efficiency due to unequal heat inputs to series- or parallel-connected diodes, and studies the operating characteristics of a multiple-diode system. The results are applied to a specific thermionic reactor configuration… more

Secondary Tetanus Antitoxin Responses in Mice Elicited Prior to Irradiation

Description: Secondary tetanus antitoxin responses were abolished in mice when sublethal radiation doses of 650 rads were delivered by short-term exposure 3 hr before the second injection of antigen. Nearly normal secondary responses were observed when the same radiation doses were delivered 4 days after antigenic stimulation, and sera were obtained 8 days later. Radiosensitivity of the seemingly radioresistart secondary antibody responses was demonstrated by ultimate repression of antitoxin titers when rad… more

A Study of the Thermodynamic Properties of the Vanadium-Iron Alloy System

Description: The vapor pressure of iron over vanadium-iron alloys was measured by the torsion-effusion method in the temperature range from 1500 to 1700 deg K. The chemical activities, as weil as the free energies, entropies, and enthalpies of formation, of the alloys were computed from the vapor pressure data. The activities of iron exhibited large negative deviations from Raoult's law throughout the entire compositional range. Although the activities of vanadium, as determined by the Gibbs-Duhem relation,… more
