Zirconium Hazards Research

Description: "The study of the sensitivity characteristics of Zr samples such as sponge, scrap, foil, and powder was continued. Of particular interest was the determination of the relative sensitivity of these materials to such stimuli as electrostatic discharge and an induced shock wave. The investigation of the zirconium-water reaction and zirconium-gas reactions at relatively low temperatures was continued."

Water Hammer Tests Loop Able Pwp Land Reactor, 1957

Description: "This report essentially substantiates the preliminary data reported ln WAPD-PWR-PMF-898. The Primary Coolant System of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, comprises four loops. Each of the loops has one pump to control the mass rate of water flow-. A series of tests were conducted on the cooling system of the PWR land reactor to determine the magnitude and duration of the water hammer pressure wave resulting from check valve closure. The water hammer pressure wav… more

Spectrographic Analysis of Normal Human Tissue from Miami, Florida

Description: All tissues included in this report were received from Miami, Florida and the majority are from Jackson memorial Hospital. They were collected, ashed and analyzed according to the methods described in ORNL-CF-57-2-2. The average value of the concentration for each element in a tissue is the average of the concentrations in only those samples of the tissue which contained the element. For example, if, of 25 lives analyzed, only 10 contained lead, the average for lead in liver is the average of t… more

Methods of Collection, Preparation and Spectrographic Analysis of Human Tissues

Description: To determine the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of a radionuclide which may be ingested or inhaled with exceeding accepted levels of exposure tot he human body, it is necessary to know the average normal concentration of the natural element in the various tissues of the body. Any element may be ingested or inhaled as the element or as a compound. Although nearly all elements have been observed in living tissue, few quantitative observations had been made before 1950. Preliminary studie… more

A Theory of Hyperfragments

Description: "Mesic decay of hyperfragments is discussed systematically on the basis of a previous model for hyperfragments. The general formalism for the two-body and three-body mesic decay was developed. The polarization-direction correlation and the angular correlation for the two-body and the three-body decays are discussed together with the decay probability. The formalism was developed so as to include the isotopic spin selection rule ( DELTA I = 1/2 and 3/2) for the mesic decays. The theory was appli… more

Fission Product Activity in SM-1 Core I Primary System and Surface Contamination on SM-1 Type Fuel Elements. Task XVIII, Phases 2 and 3

Description: Abstract; The fission product data obtained during SM-1 Core I operation (June 1957 - May 1960) is reviewed briefly and interpreted. Evidence is presented to indicate that a fuel element defect was responsible for the high fission product activity level observed in the primary coolant. Relative escape coefficients are calculated and the defect size estimated. Anticipated fission product levels during SM-1 Core II and SM-1A Core I operation are estimated from alpha surface contamination data o… more

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core Temperature and Flow Instrumentation (Task XIV) Covering Special Test Procedures.

Description: Abstract: Test procedures for special tests involving in-core SM-1 temperature and flow instrumentation are described (Task XIV Package Tests). These tests involve in-core steady state flow and temperature measurements, loss of flow transients, load transients, reduced primary system pressure operations and reduced element flow. The thermal and hydraulic conditions prevailing in these tests, including steady state and transient burnout rations, are developed. The effects of reduced system pres… more

Intermediate Heat Exchanger Preliminary Design. Vol. 1, IHX Preliminary Design

Description: Preface: The intermediate heat exchanger is designed for operation in a nuclear power plant using liquid sodium as the primary and secondary coolant. Since the primary fluid coming from the reactor is radioactive, the purpose of the IHX is to transfer heat to a nonradioactive fluid which then goes to a steam generator. Because of this activity the until will be enclosed in a concrete pit and will not be accessible during periods of operation. Immediately after shut down it will be necessary … more

LAPACK Working Note 9: A test matrix generation suite

Description: We discuss the design and implementation of a suite of test matrix generators for testing linear algebra software. These routines generate random matrices with certain properties which are useful for testing linear equation solving, least squares, and eigendecomposition software. These properites include the spectrum, symmetry, bandwidth, norm, sparsity, conditioning (with respect to inversion or for the eigenproblem), type (real or complex), and storage scheme (dense, packed or banded).

Characterizing cinder rock with the scanning electron microscope. [From in-situ retorting]

Description: Friable cinder rock was examined by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/ED). The technique consisted of impregnating the rock with epoxy resin and then locating porosity sites by the presence of epoxy. The resin was identified in the sample by correlating beam damage and elemental analysis by x-ray fluorescence (ED) with a characteristic phase in the SEM image. Analyses of this type should be useful in interpreting experiments designed to simulate in situ reto… more
