Absorption by Soil of Strontium From 216-S Crib Waste

Description: A preliminary soil column experiment with a waste sample from the 207-S-11 well, which monitors the 216-S cribs, indicated that cesium was absorbed almost completely by the soil but that strontium breakthrough to ground water in the near future seemed likely. Accordingly, it was suggested that the 216-S wastes be discharged to a new disposal site, and that samples of the wastes which are currently being discharged to the 216-S cribs be obtained for soil absorption tests. The primary purpose of … more

The Alpha Half-Life of the Isotope Pu-241

Description: A plutonium solution of known Pu-241 content was purified by solvent extraction techniques to remove uranium and americium impurities. Portions of this purified solution were then analyzed for U-237 as a function of time. Since the growth of U-237 occurs directly by the alpha decay of Pu-241, these measurements provided sufficient data for calculation of the Pu-241 alpha half-life, which was found to be 2.91 ± 0.50 x 10⁵ years.

Decontamination Program Task II. Volume II, Evaluation of Chemical Agents for Nuclear Reactor Decontamination

Description: Abstract: The caustic permanganate-rinse decontamination treatment was investigated. Loop and metallurgical studies were performed to determine optimum operating conditions as well as the metallurgical effects of the treatment. A treatment with 10 percent sodium hydroxide and 5 percent potassium permanganate solution followed by a rinse with a 5 percent ammonium citrate, 2 percent citric acid and 1/2 percent Versene solution was chosen for the decontamination of a stainless steel steam generat… more

DIMENSIONAL INSTABILITY OF URANIUM--II. Second Annual Progress Report, January 1, 1956 to June 30, 1957

Description: The mechanism of dimensional instability of irradiated uranium is under investigation. In order to confirm an assumption of the diffusion theory, the magnitude of diffusion anisotropy in alpha-uranium single crystals is being determined by measurement of the diffusion coefficients along the principal directions. Progress made in working out procedures for the preparation of uranium single crystals, preparation of the diffusion couples, measurement of valid concentration-penetration data in very… more

Our work this quarter has to some extent been directed towards the Spectroscopy Symposium held at Argonne National Laboratory on February 15, 16, and 17. This report consists principally of brief abstracts of the two papers given at this meeting. Progress since the last quarterly report included completion of the echelle comparator calibration, and the successful production and photographing of the desired spect… more

Effect of Various Blade Modifications on Performance of a 16-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor 3 - Effect on Over-All Performance Characteristics on Increasing Stator-Blade Angles in Inlet Stages

Description: The stator-blade angles in the first four stages of a 16-stage axial-flow compressor were increased in order to decrease the angles of attack of these stages, and thereby to improve part-speed performance. The performance of this modified compressor was compared with that of the same compressor with original blade angles.

Effects of Furnance Pressures on Quality of Remelted Uranium : Final Report, Production Test 314-59-M

Description: The following report follows a test for remelting and casting uranium scrap specified that a pressure of 25 microns or less must be attained within the furnace before a charge is melted. The report was made to evaluate the effect of furnace pressures upon the quality if recast uranium metal.

Energy Distribution of Fast Neutron Beam

Description: Experimental techniques are described for the spectral measurement of a collimated fast-neutron beam. A H/sub 2-/ filled cloud chamber, proton-recording nuclear plates, and threshold fission foils were used as neutron detectors in the measurements. As an application of these techniques, the energy distribution and absolute flux of the fast neutron beam emerging from the Los Alamos fast reactor was measured from 0.1 to 18 Mev. (D.E.B.)

Description: Experimental techniques are described for the spectral measurement of a collimated fast neutron beam. A hydrogen filled cloud chamber, proton recording nuclear plates, and threshold fission foils were used as neutron detectors in the measurements. As an application of the above technique, the energy distribution and absolute flux of the fast neutron beam emerging from port 5W of the Los Alamos fast rector has been measured from 0.1 Mev to 18 Mev. The result show a spectral curve possessing a ma… more

Experimental investigation of dynamic relations in a 48-inch ram-jet engine

Description: Engine dynamics were investigated for supercritical operation of the ram jet at Mach 2.75 over a range of simulated altitudes from 68,000 to 82,000 feet. Indicial-and frequency-response tests were conducted with fuel flow as the input variable. For a wide range of operating points, the response of static or total pressure to fuel flow consisted of a dead time followed by a response form that generally approximated a linear, first-order, lead-lag. The dead time varied significantly only with dis… more

Fabrication Procedure For RaLa Source Fuel Rods

Description: A new method to procure RaLa sources was proposed by Group CMR-10, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. This method depended upon irradiation of small-diameter U235 wire in the Materials Testing Reactor, Arco, Idaho. A procedure for cladding and sealing U235 wire in stainless steel tubing, by drawing, plugging the tube ends, and welding, was developed, tested, and proved to be satisfactory.

FUNDAMENTALS OF DIFFUSIONAL BONDING--II. Second Annual Progress Report, June 30, 1956 to June 30, 1957

Description: The study of the kinetics of layer growth in the aluminum -- nickel system and the effect thereon of applied pressure has been continued. Additional information has been obtained about the growth of the beta phase, and a method was developed whereby the kinetics of growth of the beta phase could be investigated. The implications of Vasileff's equations which provide the solution for interdiffusion in a three-phase two-component system have been examined semi-analytically, and quantitative insig… more

FUNDAMENTALS OF SINTERING--II. Second Annual Progress Report, June 30, 1956 to June 30, 1957

Description: Rates of spheroidization and densification of gold and of nickel wire compacts were measured as a function of time, temperature, and wire size. The necks joining the sintered particles were found to grow proportionally to the one- fifth root of time. The value of the coefficient of self-difiusion calculated from the sintering rate is of the sane order of magnitude as that obtained by ordinary tracer techniques but with a somewhat higher activation energy. These results are entirely consistent w… more
