Preliminary Data on Fallout From the Fall 1961 USSR Test Series: Staff Report

Description: From introduction: "Following the USSR announcement of its intention to resume testing, arrangements were made for the three stations collecting individual rainfall samples to begin analyses for short-lived nuclides. Some of the data are now available and are reported here." From Data: "The available data, including samples for Houston, Texas and Louisville, Kentucky are given in the tables at the end of this report."

Removal of Scale-Forming Compounds from Sea Water

Description: From Recommendations: "Laboratory research on the process for descaling sea water should be continued to improve the process and thereby lower the cost. Research efforts should be concentrated on methods for producing low cost sodium phosphates (needed for the precipitation of the scale-forming elements) from fertilizer grade phosphates and on increasing the crystalline nature of the phosphate precipitates (to reduce dewatering costs). The descaled sea water should be experimentally evaluated f… more

Conceptual Design for 75 MWe Mixed Spectrum Superheating Reactor Power Plant

Description: "This report presents the conceptual design of a 75 MWe prototype Mixed Spectrum Superheater power plant. The scope of the work has emphasized primarily the design, performance, and cost information on the nuclear portion of the plant. The research and development programs required to insure plant feasibility are also present."--Intro.

Reactor process flow technical data

Description: A computer program is being developed for the solution of general system flow problems. As a complement to this program, a summary of the process system has been prepared. This assembles information from a number of different reports, drawings and technical notebooks into one place for easy use and reference. It is expected that the information contained in this report will be of use in safety and design studies of these process systems. This report presents current values of the reactor flow c… more

KER loop fuel testing program and schedule, CY 1962

Description: The interests of several departments at Hanford are involved in the planning, execution and evaluation of the results of the KER loop testing effort in support of the NPR fuel program. The varied interests and activities of the participating groups must be well-integrated if effective use of our limited testing capability is to be made. The purpose of this report is to help achieve this integration by summarizing the current thinking on the goals of the NPR fuel testing program and by presentin… more

Development of Ductile Beryllium Composites

Description: The work of the second year to produce ductile beryllium composites by liquid-phase sintering is reported. Ductility in a predominantly beryllium composite was sought through the attainment of a structure in which beryllium particles are enveloped in a ductile metallic matrix. As the result of the investigation of aluminum-silver binary al!oys, aluminum-40 to 50% silver compositions were added to the silver-5 to 8% aluminum compositions as candidate matrices satisfying the requirenent that the … more

Ground Water Test Well D, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada

Description: Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is appraising the possibility, however slight, that the ground water beneath the Nevada Test Site, possibly contaminated by nuclear detonations, may carry radioactive fission products to places where they may constitute a public hazard.

Radiation Effects in Borides, Part I - Helium Release and Swelling in Irradiated Borides

Description: The principal objective of the work being reported was to irradiate a variety of borides in order to assess the relationship of crystal structure to helium retention and structural changes. A secondary objective was to compare the irradiation behavior of powders and dense solids. Another objective was to compare the behavior of borides with similar crystal structures but having metal atoms with vastly different absorption cross-sections, for example, zirconium and hafnium diborides.

Radiation Effects in Borides, Part II. Fission Sintering of Boride Powders

Description: During the post-irradiation examination of borides it was discovered that the samples which had been irradiated as powders had sintered into firmly bonded bodies. This radiation sintering occurred at temperatures hundreds of degrees below that required to produce similar interparticle bonding by the application of heat alone. , This report discusses the results of the postirradiation examination of some of these borides which were irradiated as powders and compares the results of our observatio… more

Secondary Missiles Generated by Nuclear-Produced Blast Waves

Description: The generation of secondary missiles by blast waves was investigated in Operation Plumbbob for three nuclear detonations with estimated yields of 11, 38, and 44.5 kt. A trapping technique was used to determine the impact velocities for 17,524 missiles (stones, glass fragments, spheres, and military debris or steel fragments) which occurred in open areas, houses, and an underground shelter with an open entryway. The equivalent ideal-wave peak overpressures computed from measured blast data for t… more
