An Analysis of Jet-Propulsion Systems Making Direct Use of the Working Substance of a Thermodynamic Cycle

Description: From Summary: "The results of the analysis showed that the combined efficiency, which is unacceptably low at speeds less than 300 miles per hour, becomes nearly equal to that of conventional power plants of current design at 500 miles per hour. It was also shown that the efficiency will be increased considerably as the physical limitations on cycle temperature and blower speed are raised and as the efficiencies of the system components are improved."

Comparison of observed and calculated flattening at 105-D

Description: The total power output of a unit may be represented by the power output of the most productive tube or tubes multiplied by a quantity designated as the ``number of effective tubes.`` The number of effective tubes observed at 105-D under two different arrangements of poisoned columns has been compared with values of this quantity calculated from theory. It was found that in each case the observed number of effective tubes was about 5% less than the ideal number obtainable by an optimum arrangeme… more

Complexing Agents for the Solvent Extraction of Uranium from Thorium. I. The Use of Thiocyanate in the Extraction of Uranium. II. The Use of Antipyrine in Solvent Extraction

Description: Abstract. In the first section of this technical report a new method of extracting uranium from thorium nitrate solution is discussed. This method consists of extracting an aqueous solution of thorium nitrate, nitric acid, sodium sulphate, and potassium thiocyanate with hexone. By this procedure, using an equal volume of hexone it is possible to extract 83 percent of the uranium while only 0.3 percent of the thorium is extracted. other experiments show that even greater separations are possi… more

Cooling of a Double-Row Radial Engine by Water Injection to the Individual Cylinders

Description: "An injection system that supplies water to each cylinder of a double-row radial engine was tested...as part of a general investigation of the power-plant installation of a four-engine heavy bomber. The tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of water injection in cooling the engine during take-off. The injection of 500 pounds of water at the take-off power condition reduced the maximum measured exhaust-valve-seat temperature 64 degrees Fahrenheit and the maximum spark-plug-gasket t… more

Determination of the Effect of Horizontal-Tail Flexibility on Longitudinal Control Characteristics

Description: Report presenting an iteration method for determining the longitudinal control characteristics of a flexible horizontal tail. The method permits factors such as the actual spanwise variation of elasticity and the aerodynamic induction effects due to three-dimensional flow to be accounted for to any degree of accuracy needed. An analysis is also included of the effects of horizontal-tail flexibility on the tail effectiveness, the hinge-moment characteristics, and the control-force gradients in a… more

Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of a Tailless All-Wing Airplane Model with Sweepback in the Langley Free-Flight Tunnel

Description: Force and flight tests were performance on an all-wing model with windmilling propellers. Tests were conducted with deflected and retracted flaps, with and without auxiliary vertical tail surfaces, and with different centers of gravity and trim coefficients. Results indicate serious reduction of stick-fixed longitudinal stability because of wing-tip stalling at high lift coefficient. Directional stability without vertical tail is undesirably low. Low effective dihedral should be maintained. Ele… more

Dilution of Exhaust-Gas Samples From a Multicylinder Engine Equipped With an Exhaust-Gas Collector

Description: Report discusses the results of an investigation to determine the effect of a collector ring on exhaust-gas sampling. The results of tests to determine the percentage by volume of exhaust gas from the collector ring are presented for several engine powers and speeds. The danger of air dilution from the breathing action of the engine is almost entirely eliminated by the use of a collector ring.

Description: Report presenting the results of tests to determine the extent to which the knocking tendency of an air-cooled engine cylinder is increased when the cylinder head is poorly cooled and when the cylinder temperature exceeds the maximum specified by the engine manufacturer. The tests showed that, when the cylinder-head temperature was increase from 400 to 600 degrees Fahrenheit, the knock-limited indicated mean effective pressure was reduced 3 percent at a fuel-air ratio of 0.097 and 39 percent at… more

Effect of Increasing the Size of the Valve-Guide Boss on the Exhaust-Valve Temperature and the Volumetric Efficiency of an Aircraft Cylinder

Description: "An exhaust-port design was developed that provides a heat-flow path of increased area from the valve stem to the outside surface of a Wright C9GC cylinder. The effects of the new port design on exhaust-valve temperature and volumetric efficiency were determined from single-cylinder engine tests. A reduction of 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the exhaust-valve temperature was obtained with no decrease in volumetric efficiency or power output" (p. 1).
