A Rapid Method for Determination of Water in TO₃

Description: Summary: A set of conditions is described for a ten minute determination of water in TO₃ by ignition and absorption of the evolved water in magnesium perchlorate. Complete conversion to T₃O₃ is obtained under these conditions, so that total loss on ignition and total T (plus non-volatile impurity) content may also be obtained. It has been found unnecessary to employ Cu foil to prevent interference by nitrates, which may be present with a nitrate/water ratio as high as 5, and in an amount that d… more

The influence of vertical-tail design and direction of propeller rotation on trim characteristics of a twin-engine-airplane model with one engine inoperative

Description: Report presenting testing to determine the influence of propeller rotation and vertical-tail design on the trim characteristics of a model of a twin-engine airplane with one engine inoperative. The tests showed that the effect of mode of propeller rotation on the directional trim characteristics of the model operating with asymmetric power was considerable. Results regarding the effect of mode of propeller rotation and effect of vertical-tail design are provided.

Improving engine cooling with special baffles

Description: Report presenting testing to determine the effect of special baffles on the temperatures and cooling-air requirements of the Wright 1820 G200 and R-2600-8 cylinders. Nine baffles were tested with the 18020 cylinder and two were tested with the R-2600-8 cylinder. Results indicated that the internal cylinder surfaces with good thermal connection with the external-cooling means respond to changes in external cooling.

Wind-tunnel tests of a blunt-nose aileron with beveled trailing edge on an NACA 66(215)-216 airfoil with several modifications of aileron nose and adjacent airfoil contour

Description: Report presenting an investigation of ailerons with a beveled trialing edge and a blunt-nose overhang of 35 percent aileron chord on an NACA 66(215)-26 airfoil in two-dimensional flow. Five configurations were tested with various modifications of the aileron nose and adjacent airfoil contour to determine the effect of modifications on lift and aileron hinge-moment characteristics.

Dilution of Exhaust-Gas Samples From a Multicylinder Engine Equipped With an Exhaust-Gas Collector

Description: Report discusses the results of an investigation to determine the effect of a collector ring on exhaust-gas sampling. The results of tests to determine the percentage by volume of exhaust gas from the collector ring are presented for several engine powers and speeds. The danger of air dilution from the breathing action of the engine is almost entirely eliminated by the use of a collector ring.

Determination of the Stability and Control Characteristics of a Tailless All-Wing Airplane Model with Sweepback in the Langley Free-Flight Tunnel

Description: Force and flight tests were performance on an all-wing model with windmilling propellers. Tests were conducted with deflected and retracted flaps, with and without auxiliary vertical tail surfaces, and with different centers of gravity and trim coefficients. Results indicate serious reduction of stick-fixed longitudinal stability because of wing-tip stalling at high lift coefficient. Directional stability without vertical tail is undesirably low. Low effective dihedral should be maintained. Ele… more

Strain Measurements and Strength Tests on the Tension Side of a Box Beam With Flat Cover

Description: Report discusses the shear and normal stresses caused by a load applied until failure on the tension side of an open box beam with a flat stiffened cover. The maximum strain was found to be much less than in solid tensile specimens of the same material. Special attention is paid to the variation in strains at various parts on the beam and the potential effects of rivet holes and riveting, which requires further testing.

Heat-Transfer Coefficients for Air Flowing in Round Tubes, in Rectangular Ducts, and Around Finned Cylinders

Description: Report reviews published data and presents some new data on heat transfer to air flowing in round tubes, in rectangular ducts, and around finned cylinders. The available data for heat transfer to air in straight ducts of rectangular and circular cross section have been correlated in plots of Stanton number versus Reynolds number to provide a background for the study of the data for finned cylinders. Equations are recommended for both the streamlined and turbulent regions, and data are presented… more

Comparison of observed and calculated flattening at 105-D

Description: The total power output of a unit may be represented by the power output of the most productive tube or tubes multiplied by a quantity designated as the ``number of effective tubes.`` The number of effective tubes observed at 105-D under two different arrangements of poisoned columns has been compared with values of this quantity calculated from theory. It was found that in each case the observed number of effective tubes was about 5% less than the ideal number obtainable by an optimum arrangeme… more
